Much Ado About ReadyNAS Ultra 4
Hi,
Does anyone have an estimate of how much time is needed to initialise 4 x 2Tb Hitachi HDD on a ReadyNAS Ultra 4?
I had this unit set up and it was working fine.
I decided to boot it up today to migrate my files from my NV+. Anyway, to keep it short, I had to set the Ultra 4 unit to Factory Default.
Now all that it's showing is "Testing disks" on the LCD screen. It's been running for about 1 hour or so.
Has anyone experienced this before?
Any help would be appreciated!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNo need for a crossover cable. The NICs are auto-sensing. Provided your switch is a gigabit one and your cables are Cat5e or newer I don't think it'll make a difference.
Cat5 is too old. Unless you have 100Mbit devices I'd suggest throwing out Cat5 cables. Cat5e or newer is what you need. - AdiemusAspirantOk. Sorry. I do use Cat 5e. In fact, I'm in the midst of migrating over to Cat 6 cables. Thanks for the input!!
- AdiemusAspirantSo far so good... 616Gb of data transferred...
- AdiemusAspirantHow does this differ from Netgear's Replicate App?
- PapaBear1ApprenticeThe Replicate application is between remote units, not ones on the same sub net.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou can use Replicate with devices on the same subnet though. In fact this is recommended for the full backup.

Frontview backup is free, replicate requires a license :slap:Adiemus wrote: How does this differ from Netgear's Replicate App?
Among other things, Replicate backs up settings and data, and has versioning. Replicate also supports firewall traversal.
There is more info here: http://www.readynas.com/?cat=93 - AdiemusAspirantThanks everyone for your input! I guess the NFS and RSync transfers work for me. Unless the license for Replicate is really cheap, I doubt I'll get it. What's more, going the NFS and RSync way seems for geeky. Fits my geekiness... :p
Currently 725Gb of data transferred. More to go! - AdiemusAspirantJust some figures for people considering the ReadyNAS Ultra 4. I'm getting 8.1Tb of space from installing 4x3Tb Hitachi Ultrastar HDDs, running in X-RAID2.
- AdiemusAspirantI'm looking to upgrade the RAM on my Ultra 4 when the transfers are done.
So far, from the forums, I've seen the following 4Gb DDR2 modules to work with the ReadyNAS Ultra 4.
- Patriot 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Model PSD24G6672S
- Corsair 4GB DDR2 SODIMM Memory PC2-6400 (800Mhz) Model VS4GSDS800D2
Anyone has had other brands of RAM running well on the Ultra 4?
