mv_xor_status+88

On my ReadyNAS 104, Firmware 6.5 I changed, one after another, all 4 of the 500GB HDD's to 3GB HDD's to extens the capacity.

All went well up to the last disk. The process of degrading and restoring redundancy was confirmed ok.

During the resync of the last disk, the following error message appeard on the LCD panel of the ReadyNAS 104:

mv_xor_status+88

The NAS cannot be reached neither though Browser (Safari) nor Finder or RadAIR any more,

What is the best way to continue to save the HDD's and the contest, if possible.

Joe

  • Hello!

After 50 hours of resynch, my RN104 is now redundant (Using X-Raid).

Do the procedure of upgrading the RN1004 firmware with 6.5.2 T486 fixed the bug.

    Just for your information.

    Thanks again for your support.

    Best regards.

    Hi Jupp13,

    Welcome to the community!

Did the resync of the last disk stopped at some point? If you can confirm that the 1st three disks resync just fine, you can turn off the unit and remove the 4th disk that caused this error message. Download the logs and send it us.

    Kind regards,

      Dear Brian,

      thanks for your answer.
Yes, the first three disks resynced properly. After restarting the unit with all 4 disks it shows the message 'page_mapping+0’ for 48 hours now.

I will remove the 4th disk and restart the unit and will come back to you with the log, once I can get access.

      Thanks,
      Joe

        Dear Brian,

is there any direct email-adress I can send the log-files to?

        community@netgear.com is bouncing back.

        Thanks, Joe

  • This happened to me just the other day as well. However I can probably confirm that the drives aren't the problem, as it occurred to both NAS drives I owned.

RN10400s, one on 6.5.0 and one on 6.5.1, each originally with three WDEFRX 4TB Red drives in RAID 5 (X-RAID). I added in a fourth drive to both (same model) and at about 25%, both hit the same error. Freezes the NAS completely, can't access the UI, nothing.

Restarted the NAS units, and resyncing resumed for a few percent before eventually freezing with the same error again.

Not sure where to go with them now.

      Hi ShortRaver,

Many thanks for your confirmation of my issue and yes that is exactly what has happened.  Maybe it is the NAS OS that is the issue.

Hopefully this information will be beneficial to the guys here and in Netgear Support.  I am currently opperating my NAS with just the 3 HDD's now and the fourth drive sitting on the shelf waiting for help on resolving it while the NAS itself is flashing DATA DEGRADED on its panel.

But everything is operating as normal. I can add files etc and play files from it too.

      Regards

        Hi,

I confirm I also have experienced this issue after adding a fourth drive to my RN10400 last night, it has crashed several times during the re-sync process, does anyone know if is likely to be stable after the re-sync is done or should I just give up trying to add the drive?

        Regards

        DS

  • Dear all

Have also the same problem since yesterday, and also when i added the 4th hdd. Now the NAS is unreachable...

Hope Netgear will find the solution as i'm desperate and fear for my data as i don't have other hdd for my huge backup

  • For information i'm using 4 identical hdd (WD RED 6GD) approved by netgear

    Kind regards

      Hi migmat,

Yep sure looks to be more and more like a NAS OS issue. Granted I am still on 6.5.0 and not going to update to 6.5.1 until this is sorted.

All my 4 drives are identical and from same source - WD RED 4TB

      Regards

There is an entry in the 6.4.2 release notes: "Fixed a potential hang on RN104 systems due to a race condition when using the CPU's RAID5 offload engine."  I've been wondering if there is a connection (e.g. there is still something wrong there).

  • So I've made a little bit of progress. After pulling the plugs to restart the units, as soon as the boot sequence is complete, I proceeded to perform a OS restart (top right power icon in the UI), and since then one of my units has managed to run it's resync from 30% to almost completion (still a couple of hours left) without freezing. The other did froze once, but since performing the same restart again, it's progressing well.

Not the be all solution, but something to consider if you really need to get that additional drive synced.

      Hi,

I tried the 'soft restart' option as mentioned by ShortRaver, and indeed it synced all the way throught the night. Unfortunately this morning, the error message appeared again. And again after another hard reboot followed by soft restart.

ShortRaver: Did you manage to get your 4 disks synced?

      Kind regards,

      Mark.

Yep, all 4 disks synced on both units successfully, has been running all day without issue. Will keep monitoring in the meantime and post any updates.

One thing I have noticed though is that the Activity LED is always on. Was that always the case?!?

  • Many thx for ur useful answers.

Do i have ny chance to install an ancient firmware in order to solve my problem? If it would be possible, how can i do it?

    Cheers

It can be done, but would require a factory reset (destroying all your data), and Netgear says users have bricked their RN100 series NAS attempting it.  So I don't recommend it.  It'd be best if someone from Netgear would troubleshoot it, and fix it.

  • 5th time was a charm... Or I wasn't patient enough the other times. Got caught in the Southwest server issues and stuck in San Diego for two days paid off. Just finished syncing and I'm in good shape.

Thanks for all the help to those that offered. Cheers!

      Hello everyone,

I'm in France, and found the same problem when adding a 4th disk on my 104.

So I extracted the new disk and reboot the system,  but the GUI  is saying now that " data are dammaged".

The only solution I found is to upgrade my 104 with a Beta FW, underlining that the use of this will automatically end the waranty.

Does someone have any other solution?

Any risk for my data on the NAS (still available)?

Thank you for your support, as I didn't see any comment or support from Netgear on this topic.

      Best regards. Ralph

I work for NETGEAR and made a general suggestion to try the beta firmware as it has a fix for the cause of this problem.

It doesn't end the warranty but support will be unable to help if you open a support case whilst you are running beta firmware. If you open a support case and support suggests during the troubleshooting that you update to beta firmware then that's entirely different.

Anyway if you are concerned you could do a factory reset (wipes all data, settings, everything) on non-beta firmware and support wouldn't see anything on the system to suggest that you'd ever used beta firmware.

We'd advise where possible that you update your regular backup before installing beta firmware.

If you run into issues on beta firmware then you can post about it in the beta section of the community. We can do our best to try to help on the community but this may be well short of what would be possible via a support case. We carefully monitor the feedback provided on beta firmware.

  • Okay... My system read data Degraded but eventually everything cleared up. Literally when resyncing it wasn't until it hit 100% and sort of rebooted did it act normal. This takes days, be patient. Try all steps on page 6 and do them over and again. Have all four drives in the NAS! I kept taking my 4th drive out and it kept crashing.

Hi There, and really thank you for all your kind answers and support.

      So:

      - I extracted the 4th disk (before completion of volume expension, as I had the famous error "mv_xor_status+88")

      - I upgrade my NAS with the new Beta firmware 6.5.2.T486

      - After reboot, strangely it showed "Degraded", but the volume has been expanded

      - I re- inserted the 4th disk

      - Volume re-syncing (still 40 hours to go), and no more freeze or mv_xor* message for the time being.

I will keep you informed at the end of the process.

      Best regards.
