NAS PRO BE no longer seeing Volumes and Shares after adding
As the original 4x500GB disks died, I've been replacing them with 1TB Seagate (ST1000DM003-1CH162) disks over the course of the last year or so. Over the weekend, I added another 1TB Seagate dick to bring the total to 5x1TB. But now then FV has them all listed as "Dead" except for the one I removed to check the type (it appears to be on perpetual resync). It also finds none of my shares and no volumes. I'm at a loss to understand how adding a disk and powering back up caused all this. I noticed some of the old disks had jumpers on them but don't know why because the new ones don't.
FV/Home reports I'm running X-Raid 2 and RAIDiator 4.2.26 which I assume is current for this model.
I read a lot of posts that spoke of backing up the NAS data but that's was the whole point of having the NAS Pro and Raid to begin with; it's where all my computers back up to.
If anyone knows how to get around this, I would appreciate a reply.
Thanks :(

- StephenBGuru - Experienced User4.2.27 is the current firmware. I'm confused on the "one I removed to check the type (it appears to be on perpetual resync)" remark. This was removed before you added the Seagate? When did you remove it - before or after you inserted the new drive? The new disk was an add, or a replacement?
If you need the data back, you should try paid support. - RockmanAspirantThere were 4 1TB drives working and then I added a 5th. I removed and reinserted one to verify the type before posting and it finished the resync eventually but didn't help.
What I like now is RAIDar shows all drives Green except for #1 and FV only lists #2 as being alive. RAIDar and FV also show a drive in a bay that is empty (#5) which I removed earlier as that seemed to be the start of everything bad happening. That didn't fix anything either. This whole NAS thing has been very frustrating over the years I've had it. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHave you checked the SMART stats for all the drives?
- RockmanAspirantRight now they are all greyed out except for the one drive that it thinks is healthy. Earlier today and yesterday, I looked at all the stats and nothing appeared out of the ordinary. Didn't see any error counts showing up.
It just really irritates me because the original 4 disks are still in their original slots, the darn software just needs to read what's on them. It's not complicated.
Thanks,
Dan - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI understand it is frustrating. The fact that the shares are gone is more troubling to me than the FV and RAIDar status (though of course they are likely related).
The direct path is to give up on the data and do a factory reset. Before doing that, perhaps try powering down the NAS and booting up with drive 5 removed, and see if what happens. You can also repeat that experiment with drives 4,3,2,1. - RockmanAspirantThis is getting almost ludicrous. I tried your suggestion and now RAIDar shows all my disks as Green but FV only shows #4 as being alive; which is of course different than the #2 it showed before the power off/on. The logs still show "the Volume Scan failed to run properly" for the umpteenth time and the Volumes and Shares are still missing. GRRRR!
Most of the data is replaceable but it will be damn sure inconvenient and take quite some time to do. Thank God for Carbonite, nothing mission critical lost but I seriously wonder why have a NAS box for file storage at all.
Thanks for the help - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWithout seeing your logs it would be difficult to speculate on what may have happened.
- RockmanAspirantI'll upload tomorrow and you can have a look see mdgm. Thanks

I had some similar symptoms. See this thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=70809&p=394417#p393273. Unfortunately, I didn't find a solution other than "contact support" (which would have cost me) or a factory default.
BTW, the proper way to add a drive is hot, not with power off. That may or may not have contributed to the problem. If you get everything looking good without having to factory default (in which case you might as well do it with all the drives installed), insert the new one with power on. Note, too, that my problem may have been started by a failing drive. So make a backup ASAP if you don't already have one.
