Need help, almost ready to return this thing
Sorry I didnt know where to place this topic.
I puchased the DUO v1 2 days agao and have had nothing but headaches with it thus far. I have owned a DLINK DNS-323 and a Windows Home Server in the past so I am not totally new to the NAS idea. The first day took me almost 2 hours just to get to the FrontView as the lack of installation documentation is rediculous. The nas didn't come with any hard drives and I was trying to use one of my 2TB hard drives from my dead WHS. First off, no where in the paplit documentatino did it say a hard drive is required for install. And no where does it say you require a factory reset in order to use hard drives with old data on them, and it doesn't even explain on to do a factory reset. Anyway, the installation issues aside.
Yesterday (day 2) i finally got my hard drive recognized and began the setup of users and shares, fTP etc. I wanted to FTP my data from my USB drive to the default "media" folder but access is denied for writinig to this share. I have no idea where as the settings are set to read/write just like every other drive. So i created a "Volume_1" folder and started the FTP which is still running. The main reason i purchased the DUO over the newer DNS-320 is because it holds 2x 2TB drives and can add a 2TB US B drive whereas the DNS-320 holds 2x3TB drives but no USB. In the future i want to set my 2x2TB drives as JBOD and have a 2TB USB as the backups (not all files backed up) The DNS-320 cannot support this. But for now I am setting up as individual drives and havinig Drive 1 do incremental backups to Drive 2 until i purchase a USB drive. The other main reason is Torrents, my WHS did all my torrent downloads and i cannot afford another PC and have no old PCs kicking around. Both DUO v1 and DNS-320 can do torrent clients but the built in ones are terrible. I wanted to use transmission or another similar client but didn't want to bother with the DNS-320's fun_plug and long installation process whereas, the DUO V1 has a simple add-on installation process.
Which brings me to the next issue and my current concern. I have transmission running and successfully downloaded 1 torrent. However, when i try to load the transmission web interface it is extremely slow. And sometimes will not load at all, amy take 3 or 4 times of refreshing to get a response. And also the DUO V1 frontview is slow to load and when loaded is really slugish when changing settings. The reboots of the DUO v1 take allot longer than my old DNS-323 and I am worried that if I keep this box I am in for a world of headaches in the future.
For example, I left the FTP running to trasnfer my data fronm USB via laptop over network to Drive 1 on Duo v1. I went to bed around 10pm and at 10:31pm i received an email from the Duo as follows
"A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime."
Now I have no idea when i received this message and I dont have RAID setup at all.
Can anyone please comment on my concerns and issues? OR si this normal behavour? If so I think a trip back to the retail store and an exchange for the DNS-320 might be my solution
Thanks all

There are manuals at http://www.readynas.com/docs and a FAQ at http://www.readynas.com/kb/faqperfectdark wrote:

The BitTorrent add-on hasn't been updated in a long time and is no longer included in the firmware and is no longer supported.perfectdark wrote:

The v1 has a slow CPU and 256MB RAM. It's got limited resources. Try changing the settings.json to limit the resources Transmission will use up.perfectdark wrote:

This is a standard message when an issue like this occurs. Sounds like one or more of your disks may have problems. Could you power down, remove disks (label order), hook up to SATA port in PC and check using vendor tools? - perfectdarkAspirant
ok thanks for that. There should be a guide included in the boxmdgm wrote: There are manuals at http://www.readynas.com/docs and a FAQ at http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq

I never intended to use the built in torrent for either NAS. Which is why i looked towards Transmission

Transmission is a good choice.
It seems to be, but slugish

How would i do this? If the CPU is that slow maybe I am better off woth the DNS-320 which is 800mhz CPU

I only have a laptop, like I said my WHS died and that was my only desktop PC. I onyl have the 1 hard drive in the NAS right now and it came from my WHS so nothing should be wrong with it. MY other hard drive that also came from the WHS (i had 2 x 2TB drives) is in a USB enclosure conencted to ym laptop to FTP the data to the hard drive in the NAS
All in all its looking like the Duo v1 is slow, especially if you said the CPU is slow. I'm thinking the DNS-320 might be better optuion at this point and its $100 cheaper - perfectdarkAspirantjust received another email
"Access to the disk on channel (??) is producing I/O errors. Although the array is still redundant, please replace this drive as soon as possible, as it is likely to fail soon. [Thu Feb 9 11:02:49 EST 2012]"
What is going on here? I don’t have a desktop PC to verify the hard drive but it was working fine in my WHS 2 days ago with no issues and WHS monitors Hard drive integrity. My WHS dies because of the power supply which is proprietary with the vendor and case. So $100 new decent case with power supply wasn't worth it for an old pc when I could get another nas. So I don’t believe the hard drive is bad - perfectdarkAspirantjust received another email

so held power button for 10 seconds , nothing. Had to pull the power and restart it
RAIDr recognized it, said booting, then fistems check 100%, then disappeared and RAIDr cannot see it anymore.
able to ping netgear but web intereface is not rtesponding
now what? - perfectdarkAspirantdid factory reset, wiped hard drive and started installation from scratch. scanning hard drive with S.M.A.R.T in netgear doesnt show anything significant
see how it goes tonight - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Duo v2 or the Ultra 2 would be a much better choice than the Duo v1.
Disks can and do fail at any time. The error you got is consistent with disk problems. S.M.A.R.T info won't necessarily indicate a problem. - perfectdarkAspirant

maybe but thats over $200+ tax, and this DUO v1 was $160 + tax for $100 less i think i should get the DNS-320
