New 316 (diskless) and upgrading to 6.2 before I start

Just purchased a 316 to replace an original Readynas, I also have a Readynas Pro Pioneer edition too.

The diskless 316 box is labelled as having V6.1.6 firmware

Questions:
Should I upgrade to V6.2 before I start and if so do I need to install at least one disk to do that?
I have 2 x 6Tb disks to start with raid1 mirroring, will I be able to add two more disks later and switch to Raid6 or would that require a wipe?

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Brian

  • Another question: Is it safe to shut the unit down before the rebuild is finished? I need to rearrange some power cables.
  • Well it should just continue the resync when you boot up again.
That resync time is to long. I have a 316 with five 4tb drives in Xraid with dual redundancy, a resync takes <24 hours.
When you power down I would also test all the disks using vendor tools. I do this with all new ( and used) disks before use in the nas.
  • Hello, I also just bought a 316 and 4 x 4TB WD Reds.
I also wanted to know if I should start on 6.2 or go on a later 6.1 release.
I do not want any issues and wondering if I can get any recommendations from people already running 6.2.
  • From what I've learned so far, here is my 2c worth of advice:
    - upgrading to 6.2 at the start is recommended (a number of issues with 6.1 have been addressed and additional functionality added, see release notes)
    - downgrading from 6.2 to 6.1 is not possible after upgrading to 6.2
    - enable SSH once the initial installation is complete (this will enable problem solving if something goes wrong later)
    - If you decide to install addon apps, DO NOT uninstall any addon apps as this could disable the GUI / web admin (this bug is also present in 6.1, can be fixed using SSH or Remote Access)

Good luck with getting your new NAS set up.
  • Okay, my RN316 has just been repaired by Tech Support after the GUI crash due to an App uninstall and corrupted volume during migration from RAID5 to RAID6. I have just learned how to get the unit set up in RAID6 from the start. This is way more efficient than trying to do an expansion.

    1. Start with a factory default boot and all drive bays populated. All data will be erased.
    2. Login to the admin GUI and complete the initial setup wizard.
    3. Go to the Volume tab, click on the X-RAID button to put the unit in Flex-RAID mode
    4. Click on the Setting gear next to the blue volume circle and then on the Destroy tab in the popup window.
    5. Select all drives and click on the create volume button
    6. Select RAID6 from the drop-down list in the popup window that opens, and click OK
    7. You can choose to leave the unit in Flex-RAID or switch back to X-RAID now.

At the end of this process, my unit reported that it would take 34 hours to build a RAID 6 array consisting of six 4TB disks. Much faster than my earlier attempt that took 14 hours to build a 5 disk RAID5 array and then reported that it would take over 200 hours to expand this to a 6 disk RAID6 array.

Thanks again to the Netgear Tech Support team for their help in getting my RN up and running again.

^^This^^ needs to be a sticky!

Just followed it, worked perfectly! (Minor differences like 'ok' was really 'Create' in 6.2.2 but very easy to follow)
