New ReadyNAS Ultra 2 769 hours to resync...
I have just purchased my first ReadyNAS Ultra 2.
It was a bare unit. I wanted to install 2 x 3TB Seagate drives. I new the unit needed to be running the latest firmware to support 3TB drives.
So I installed a spare 160Gb drive to upgrade the firmware to support the 3TB drives. Apart from being a bit of a pain to need a drive to install firmware it went ok.
I then installed a single 3TB drive and allowed it to resync.
After it was resynced I removed the temporary 160GB drive and installed the other 3TB drive.
A couple of reboots were needed to allow it to expand the volume from 160GB to 3TB.It all seems to be running ok and is now resyncing to the 2nd 3TB drive.
I have not copied anything to drives, frontview is reporting 193MB used by the system files.
The problem I have is that when it first started resyncing it told me the estimate is 630 hours to resync. I was shocked, but thought it must be a mistake and will drop to a more reasonable number once it has been running for a couple of hours.
After about 30 minutes, 171GB of the 2790GB was ready, but it now said 655 hours to resync.
After a couple of hours 830GB was ready, but it now says 769 hours to complete.

Judging by the progress so far it should be finished overnight, but a little concerned that the estimated time keeps going up.
Is this normal? I have read through quite a few thread, but did not see anything about this.

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserCheck the smart status for both drives (under health) and see if there is anything concerning there.
- petestrashAspirantThanks for the quick reply.
Smart status is OK and all the error counts are o. - petestrashAspirantUpdate:
After 4 hours it finished, turns out it was still expanding and not resyncing (despite what is shown).
Resync has now started and suggests it will be finished in 7 hours (still quite a long time for 188MB), but a least its doable. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAmount of data on the disks is irrelevant (except that if you read/write data it slows this process down).
The disks have to be synced sector-by-sector. This is at a lower level than your data.
I would have suggested that after you updated to the latest firmware that you powered down, removed the 160GB disk and put in your 3TB disks. Would've been a lot quicker and given you a clean setup on the latest firmware.
To get a clean setup you can do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) e.g. via System > Update > Factory Default in Frontview or via the boot menu (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu) - petestrashAspirantThanks,
I wasn't aware I could have put both drives in after the update. I assumed something was need from the 160Gb drive (which is why you couldn't update firmware without a drive)
It's been 10 hours since the expanding completed and resync is only at 58% with another 13 hours remaining.
So would it be quicker to do a factory reset now? - petestrashAspirantBit the bullet and did a Factory Default anyway so I start with everything bedded in properly. Says 5 hours to Resync.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe firmware is stored on the flash and on the disks. When you do a firmware update it is updated on the flash and on the disks. There are a few other ways to update the firmware on the flash, one can only be done by support and the other is only to be done if support recommends it.
A factory default wipes the disks and does a clean setup loading the firmware from the flash onto the disks. - petestrashAspirantThanks for that, at least I will know for next time. I planned on buying a couple more of these if all goes well.
The resync is still not complete.
