NFS Timeouts from PHD Virtual appliance
Hi All,
I am using a rn2120 as the archive store for phd virtual backup appliance and i'm seeing the following in the kernel logs.
Oct 11 17:04:54 phdvb kernel: [ 1940.528654] nfs: server x.x.x.x not responding, timed out
Oct 11 17:04:55 phdvb kernel: [ 1940.828515] nfs: server x.x.x.x not responding, timed out
This then causes the job to abort.
The appliance is built on Ubuntu, anyone else seen this happen during high workloads.
Tried increasing nfs thread count, not helping also with the async option on/off. Maybe these boxes are just not up to the task.

- I has such a problem with their products and another NFS server.
PHD's products can produce a large number of async based file delete commands as they remove file blocks from the disks. As they are async PHD do not wait for ack's and so the NFS server ends up queuing a large number of requests that must be processed by the disk sub-system. These then block other non async requests which can then timeout.
My solution was to brain dead the NFS server so that it could no support so many queued requests and have a good go at PHD for having such a poor s/w design. - rit, thanks for the reply.
