NV+ boot(?) issues - disks are clean
I started having a problem where my NV+ would freeze. It was kind of weird in that all of the LEDs would go out (even the power LED), but the LCD would stay lit with just general volume information on it. It wouldn't respond to anything I did to the power button. I unplugged it and left it that way, assuming I had a catastrophic failure of some sort. My suspicion was power supply, so I started researching that. Fast forward a few weeks and I go ahead and purchase what will be its replacement (516) and I pulled the NV+ out of its shelf to figure out what the problem was. I plug it back in and just out of curiosity, hit the power button. Much to my surprise, it powered up and began an FS check. It got to about 40-ish%, and then all the LEDs went out again, with the display frozen telling me it was at 40-ish% of the FS check. So I unplug it, plug it back in and hit the power button. Now it freezes before it gets to the FS check.
After reading these forums, folks seemed to be saying this could be due to a bad disk. I pulled all the disks and plugged them into a desktop for checking. The drives are WD RE3 1TB drives, so I used the WD tool. All drives passed the quick check, so I then ran the long tests. Many hours later, all of the disks _still_ check out. So now I'm stuck. I don't know what the problem is, and I don't want to risk further FS corruption. I have some older disks I'm going to put into the system later today and see how it behaves, but if the WD tools say all the drives are good, I'm guessing it's not a bad drive.
Any ideas? I had actually been working on getting an offsite backup going, but it takes a while to send 2TB of data offsite. That said, I'd really like to get this data back and onto my brand new 516.
Thank you in advance!

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIt could be a filling OS partition. Did you try booting with the option to skip the boot check?
- Mike_NASAspirantI haven't tried that yet, I'll give it a shot. If that does help, is there a way to deal with the filling OS partition?
- Mike_NASAspirantWell, poop. I managed to boot with the option to skip the boot check. It fully booted and seemed happy. I logged into FrontView and started setting up things to backup to my 516. Somewhere along the line, maybe 15 minutes later (I was testing the backup connection, but hadn't started a job yet), I noticed FrontView was no longer responding. I went over to where the NV+ was sitting, and all of the lights are off, including the LCD.
When it was up, I looked at the logs and nothing stood out. It used to have a habit of shutting down due to heat, but that was in the summer and when it was in a poorly ventilated cabinet. Now it's cooler and sitting on my kitchen counter (right next to the 516), so I'm really not sure what's going on. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou could try booting it up once again and deleting all the logs (system and backup). Don't download them. If that helps, then enable ssh, and then you can check the fullness of the OS partition.
- ExpertGeekAspirantHi, I think I'm having the same issue of excessive logs after expanding my NV+ v1 w/4x1TB to 4x2TB... was acting a bit odd and took a few reboots to get it up, but finally was running and then I made the mistake of "Downloading All logs" to save them before clearing them. Well, since then it won't boot, stuck at "Booting..." with blinking power button. No response to RAIDar scans or telnet access. What's the best approach? USB or TFP boot then telnet to clear the logs? Need help with a recover procedure... Thanks!

Okay, Reinstalled OS from FW, got me to where I was able to login in to Frontview and Clear the Logs, shares back online. Checked the OS partition, says I have 10% free... so, my question now is: How much free space should there be? I recently upgraded to the latest FW v 4.1.14. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
It should be well under 50% in use. I have about 22% in use on my duo.ExpertGeek wrote: ...Okay, Reinstalled OS from FW, got me to where I was able to login in to Frontview and Clear the Logs, shares back online. Do you have ReadyDLNA running? Also, did you delete all backup logs (from the backup page in frontview)? - Mike_NASAspirantGot it back online, then cleared the logs. It decided to resync the volume, which kinda makes sense after all it's been through. I logged in via ssh and / is only 32% used.
Hopefully, clearing the logs helped. I suppose having never had cleared the logs after six years, I can see where there might had been a problem. :)
I'm not out of the woods until I get the data copied off, but thank you so much for all of your help thus far Stephen! - Mike_NASAspirantWelp, it shut down again. I hope that the fact that it died during a volume sync didn't damage the volume.
Any other ideas? I'm starting to get concerned that all of these failed boots will harm the data. - Mike_NASAspirantThings are getting more interesting.
I dug up three old drives I had laying around. I tossed them in and did an OS reinstall onto them. That didn't seem to quite work, so I did a USB OS install. It booted up and I did a factory reset, and now the thing is up and running and seemingly happy. This tells me there's nothing wrong with the hardware, which is encouraging.
Plotting my next steps now.
