beamsteel, I would first take a look at the SMART data on the drives. If you have a lot of reallocated sectors, or ATA errors, this would indicate that a drive is failing. You may want to also run a memtest on the system through the boot menu to verify that you aren't experiencing a memory issue.

As I see there is no sign of ata errors or reallocated sectors. When I read the instructions for the boot menu, there are two different kind of NV+,version 1 and version 2.

If I purchased the unit in early 2009, is it a version 1 I own?

I has done a memory test. All the five leds are lit.

The power switch is flashing

on the display, "checking pat 8, memory ok"

Are you able to power off the NAS, then remove the drives (label) order, hook the drives up to an internal SATA port in your PC and check them using SeaTools?

Do I need to plug them in at once or can I run one disk at a time? I think it would be best if I can do the check with the disks in the nas. Since I started this thread my nas disk 2 got 6 reallogaterd sectors. Time to change disk?

This morning the nv+ had a kernel panic session, I managed to kick start the thing.

I have ordered two new Seagate barracuda discs, one for exchange for disc 2 (reallocated sectors: 8) and one for the shelf.

Starting to backup things now.
