NV+ (v1) repeatedly shuts down for no reason

About a month ago, one of my four drives died. I pulled it out (the unit wouldn't even boot with it in) and 3 or 4 days later i replaced it. The new one is a different model from the three old ones, but they are all Seagate drives from the compatibility list. The rebuild went OK, my data seemed fine, and i thought i would just go about my business.

However, ever since the drive was replaced, the unit is CONSTANTLY shutting down, for no apparent reason.

Usually what happens is that it runs for 2 or 3 days, then eventually i notice that the share isn't mounted on my desk-top, and i go down to check on it to find that it's shut off. I press the button, it starts a re-synch. I get an e-mail saying that an improper shut-down was detected and that it's re-syching. 6 or whatever hours later, i get another e-mail saying that it's finished synching and that it's redundant again.

I never get any errors saying that anything is wrong with the file system, the drives, or the unit. SMART data looks good. I don't hear any clicking or anything. Fan is always OK. I check on the drive and CPU temperature when it's running and they always look fine, and the unit is kept in an extremely cool (but not too humid) cellar, so it seems unlikely that it's suddenly over-heating when i'm not looking.

Two or three times i've had it do a volume scan; it found some meta-data errors the first time (which it corrected), but that was it.

When it's running, everything is fine. I can access the Web UI and my data over AFP or using the DLNA add-in, although it is VERY lightly used. (It's not like i'm constantly accessing it, i just wish that i wouldn't have to go down and screw with it every 2 days.)

I had enabled SSH access previously so i could access data from the command line, but i didn't mess with any configuration or install any software. (I did change the SNMP configuration recently, but only after this problem started.) When i look at the logs and resource usage, i can't find anything wrong. There are no errors in syslog, it's always just chugging along and then boop, restart.

Could someone please help me? Thanks!

edit 2:
I should add that this unit is always plugged into a UPS, which is also doing fine.

Your ST2000DL003-9VT166 disks need a firmware update to CC3D: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=64510

If you SSH in what is the output of the following?:

    # df -i

I see your NAS is connected to the UPS. If the above suggestions do not help resolve the issue do you still get the random shutdowns if the NAS power is not connected to the UPS?
  • Thank you for the replies. df output looks like this:

    legnica:root # df -i
Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
    /dev/hdc1 128000 19709 108291 16% /
    tmpfs 7070 1 7069 1% /USB
    /dev/c/c 182812672 968819 181843853 1% /c

    legnica:root # df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/hdc1 1.9G 741M 1.2G 38% /
    tmpfs 16k 0 16k 0% /USB
    /dev/c/c 5.4T 2.0T 3.4T 36% /c

I will try removing it from the UPS.

It sounds pretty wise to upgrade the drives too, but i don't think i even have a computer with a CD-ROM... :|

You don't need a CD rom, but you will need a way to connect the drive to the PC (Sata or eSata).
