Hi markgca,
Before trying to reinitialize your unit, you may want to try to perform "Skip volume check". If this won't work, try to boot up the ReadyNAS without any drives (assuming all are labeled or marked) and see if it will be detected by the RAIDar utility or by your network.
Hope this helps!
Kind regards,

i had tried the OS reinstall before i posted (mistakenly called it a firmware update)
i did remove the drives, inserted a single new drive, and did a factory default; and it works fine.
so there must be something up with the drive set
i guess the next step is to reinstall the disks and perform 'skip volume check'? i had started the default before i saw your post.
but at least now i know the hardware is good.
thanks for the help. hopefully the unit will tell me which drive is bad

so it worked with the spare drive
replaced the original drives (in the original slots, they were all labeled) and it still stuck at booting
so i did the skip fs check, and it is still sticks at booting
any other ideas? if not i guess i just have to factory default the entire unit and start over. i should have a recent config so it isnt the end of the world, but it would be nice if i didnt have to do it.
[edit] i didnt see your reply until after i posted mine, sorry
it is default volume, so i guess thats xraid?

XRAID for 4.1.x systems - XRAID2 didn't exist until later.

That is probably the fastest way. You might want update to the current firmware using the scratch disk (if you are not running 4.1.14 or 4.1.15 beta).

i had 4.1.14 on it
didnt know there was a .15 beta: worth upgrading? where can i find it?
