While it's not specifically aimed at this issue, see Backup-and-restore-of-VPD-file-for-legacy-ReadyNAS-running-OS6 for information on how to access the flash device.
The flash is rather small for a generic Linux OS system . You are better off putting just a boot loader there, then booting from the drives -- which is what ReadyNASOS does.
