Options for recovering deleted files on ReadyNAS NV

I have a friend with a ReadyNAS NV running 4.00c1-p2 and it looks like they accidentally deleted some files through a mapped drive (Windows 7). They have a backup from 3 weeks ago but of course the most recent work is the most important. What are the options they have for recovering those files?

  • I have the 2 bay readynas duo and I deleted all my data by deleting the shares(thought it would just un-share them). I plugged the 1st drive into a pc using a standard sata cable and ran disk internals 2.9 which took 10hrs to recover data, all the files were renamed and not in original folders but I managed to salvage all my priceless photos. I also switched the nas drive on with only the second drive in and added the other drive later, now the drive has been rysyncing for hours. Hope it is recovering my files

The ReadyNAS does have the option to enable a recycle bin for each share. You can check to see if it's enabled by going into Frontview > Shares > Share Listing and then click on the CIFS tab for the desired share. Scroll down to see if it's enabled and what the settings are. If it's enabled, there would be a folder called "Recycle Bin" on the root of the share that contains the deleted file(s).
  • Thanks. I just had them check and the 'Enable Recycling Bin' setting is NOT checked. What are the options now?
  • According to one of the Jedi's:

Well there is going to be two main ways...

    1. Call support, ask for data recovery services info. Will most likely involve shipping your NAS in. With journaling disabled, there is a decent chance of recovery stuff. What model NAS, how many disks, approximately how much data, X-RAID or Flex-RAID?

    2. Try on your own, which should only be done with decent Linux background experience, or someone who is familiar with it. Would involve using utilities like ext2 undelete stuff.

If you have journaling enabled, there isn't really any chance of recovery. Journalling will overwrite deleted areas with 000's.

If you have journaling disabled, there should be a chance....

    FrontView>System>Performance shows the Journal settings.

Netgear offers data recovery services charged by the hour (from what I've read it's in the $200.00 per hour range and most jobs can be completed within a couple of hours). Obviously, each case is unique, so you need to contact support to get a more accurate idea.

  • So I'm being told that unless it's a drive failure Netgear cannot recover the data and that I need to seek out a 3rd party to 'undelete' my files. Is this true? If so, does anyone have a recommendation for a good 3rd party?
  • Also I have 'Disable Full Data Journaling' option checked and 'Disable Journaling' option NOT checked - in case that makes a different on how recoverable the data may or may not be.
  • this means normal journaling is on and your data is gone for good.

I have broken the news to them and arranged a time to upgrade to latest firmware and attach a dedicated backup device to the unit. Will also turn on recycling bin feature. Should I also turn on Full Journaling?
