OS 6.1.7 no scheduled scrubbing?
Having lost the volume in the past on my Pro Business due to a double failure (second drive failed during a rebuild), I scheduled a weekly RAID scrubbing job to avoid this in the future, and I've been able to anticipate failures and replace drives before they fail as a result. I recently purchased an RN2120 running 6.1.7, and much to my surprise, there seems to be no way to schedule volume maintenance like scrubbing. I see others have commented on this as well, but didn't see any response.
What gives? Do drives no longer fail? Is there any way to kick-off a scheduled scrub without having to remember to do so? Can we get this feature restored if not?
As a general comment, I find the OS 6 UI, while very web 2.0 and whiz-bang, harder to navigate. I find myself having to dig around and look for things to click on that aren't obvious - I had to read through the docs to even find the scrubbing feature at all. Until we all evolve ESP, knowing where our UI choices are helps us to find them...just sayin'.
Thanks...

I agree that some things in OS6 are hard to find. Also, generally I am not a fan of hidden scroll bars. - Any idea what process/program of the Linux OS does the raid scrubbing?
My idea is to add a cron Job to perform regular scrubbing until OS 6 provides a better means.

btrfs scrub start /data - btrfs is a multi-purpose program - of course you need to know what your are doing.
This will give you all the options of the command:
btrfs --help
e.g. watch the progress (=Status) of a running scrub:
root@MAKUNASWEB:~# btrfs scrub status /data
scrub status for 56a3ce48-a09e-4156-becc-7ee4a89e2b19

total bytes scrubbed: 301.91GiB with 0 errors

root@MAKUNASWEB:~# - chirpaLuminary6.2.0 will have Volume Maintenance options for scrubbing and defragging.
- regardless how you initiate scrubbing and/or defragging, you need to be aware that this takes a long time.
In my case, scrubbing of 4TB of data took 24685 seconds which is close to 7 hrs.
I thought that scrubbing scans the *whole* disk space, but the output indicates that only the
occupied space on the disks was scrubbed?
In turn this could mean that when my disks contain more data, e.g. 20TB, then scrubbing could take 5 x 7 = 35 hrs?
root@MAKUNASWEB:~# btrfs scrub status /data

total bytes scrubbed: 4.05TiB with 0 Errors
btw. scrubbing of approx. 3TB of data on my Readynas Pro6 (6 x 2TB disks, Radiator 4.2.6) takes about 5 hrs,
which is in the same range. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI guess the extra time could be due to the ability to scrub more thoroughly on BTRFS.
- I just corrected my posting above.
I was wrong when I claimed that my new ReadyNAS 516 with OS 6.1.8 takes more time for scrubbing than my ReadNAS Pro6 with
Radiator 4.2.6
Also, I want to mention that my new 516 with 5 x 4 TB disks is fantastically low in power consumption.
When the System is idle, it consumes about 40 Watt of power.
Under full load (e.g. during scrubbing and Streaming Videos at the same time), the power consumption is approx 55-60 Watt
For comparison, my Readynas Pro6 with 6 x 2 TB consumes approx. 80 Watt when it is idle
During scrubbing the consumption is 100-110 Watt which is almost 2 x of my new box (with almost 2 x disk space!)
Note: I have UPS for all my ReadyNAS boxes, so I can easily determine the power consumption through the
display of my UPS devices (APC Back-UPS BR1200GI).
I guess that the biggest portion of power is consumed by the disks, so there seems to be a big improvement between the two disk types:
old: Hitachi HUA722020ALA330 (2TB)
new: WDC WD4000F9YZ-09N20L0 (4TB)
both are 24 x 7 Enterprise Class Disks with 5 years warranty - and on the HCL of course - BigbearfAspirant@max
I have the 516 with the same disks WDC WD4000F9YZ-09N20L0 (4TB) x6 running 4.1.8. My fan seems to run about 2100-2200 rpms to keep the drives cool. Although quieter than the Pro6 with six 2 TB 2003FYYS RE drives it seemed to have gone from 1200-1300 to 2100-2000 rpms when I added the last 3 drives. Is that your experience also.
