OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- ClubChapinAspirantSetting up OS6 now. Seems to be following the script.
Is there a recommended size of system Backup Snapshot space that I should reserve on the new vol? Default setting was 10GB. I used 100GB, which is the largest option.
I presumed as the vol grows, this may require more space and is not configurable once the vol is completed.
Hopefully, the Pro will continue to work with larger and larger drives, Although moving from my 4.2.26 with 6 TB to my 4 TB drives, it will be quite a while before I outgrow the 16 TB. Maybe 24 TB drives will be cheap at that time. :)
To update, the upgrade has gone as expected. OS6 looks great. Nice selection of apps available. Can't wait to dive into it a little deeper.
Thanks for all of the help ans assistance.
Next up, adding a dual redundant drive to the xraid. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
It's been a while since I did a complete setup, but I don't recall OS6 asking that question.ClubChapin wrote: ...Is there a recommended size of system Backup Snapshot space that I should reserve on the new vol?... - ClubChapinAspirant

I was able to set up the redundant drive (raid6).
The procedure was to turn off x-raid (seems like x-raid 2 is gone now) and destroy the default "Data" volume. At that point, I created a new, raid6, volume and turned X-raid back on.
It is building the new vol now. About 12 hours to build it with 4 x 4TB drives.
Is there anything else I should set or look at with OS6?
Is there anything I can do about the fan situation, or am I best to just turn off fan alerts and keep an eye here?
Should I run the antivirus? Are there other apps I should consider?
I'll take further questions elsewhere, so as to not clutter this thread with off topic information.
Again, thanks for all your help!
Pete - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAre you running the 6.1.9 RC? If not, update to that as that may help with the fan alerts.

No, will try this. Searching for updates does not locate it. (I wouldn't expect it to until they release it.) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt is here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=154&t=72282
When a production update is available you would be automatically prompted to update. Though new builds might not appear on the update server at the same time as elsewhere. - ClubChapinAspirant

Thanks. That seemed to work. So far, no fan alerts.
Is there somewhere to set the power behavior after a power outage? IE turn on or remain in last state or remain off?
Pete - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNo, the default state after a power outage is controlled via the BIOS.
What model do you have again? - ClubChapinAspirantIs there a way to tweak bios settings?
I have a Pro6 Business. I think it is the 200 series. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you download the logs, what is the date in bios_ver.log ?
If you get a VGA header cable and connect a VGA display and also connect a USB keyboard and mouse you can edit some BIOS settings.
I think editing the power behaviour after a power outage would be O.K. but some other things obviously shouldn't be changed.
