OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSounds like something weird may have happened with the update if you didn't install the Prep add-on.
Did you install the Prep add-on before installing the R4 to R6 image?
If you don't install the Prep add-on the NAS will simply install OS6 over the top of OS4 (without wiping OS4) on the 4GB OS partition.
At some point in the boot process it will hang and you need to power down and do a factory default.
The prep add-on tells the NAS to trigger a factory default after OS6 has been put on the internal flash but early enough in the boot process that it doesn't get stuck. When the script the prep add-on places on your NAS is run, the NAS will immediately reboot and do a factory default. - schalliolAspirantI think that was my mistake and it appears the factory default took care of it. We'll see! Thanks!
- ClubChapinAspirantI've read maybe the first 15 pages of this thread. Will read the most recent 5 or so pages.
Quick question, is the current procedure for this upgrade the steps listed in post 3?
viewtopic.php?f=51&t=70133#p389083
Do I do both or either "BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP" steps 1 - 5 and "OS6 in 3 Steps" 1 - 3?
Would the "Optional: R4 to R6" happen before steo 1 of "OS6 in 3 Steps"?
Thanks, Pete - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI should tidy this up.
Backup your data, Install the optional add-on, then do the OS6 in three steps. - ClubChapinAspirant

Excellent, thank you.
Should I do this with or without drives installed? They are new drives, not the 4.2.x drives.
In another thread, it was recommended to reboot with 1 redundant drive, then add the 2nd.
With 3 4TB drives (and then a 4th for dual redundancy) how long should this take to build the volume?
Thanks again, Pete - schalliolAspirantGood tidying, mdgm! ClubChapin, what do you mean a 4th for dual redundancy? XRAID2 should do RAID 1 with a single drive and then be able to survive any disk dying at capacity. If one loses two (dual failure) you'd be toast in most circumstances.

I've got my 4.2.26 Pro set up with 6 x 1.5TB drives in "RAID Level X-RAID2, 6 disks (with dual redundancy)", I think similar to Raid 6, but expandable.
I'd like to set up the same with OS6. Someone suggested setting up 3 x 4TB drives Xraid2, then adding a fourth to add dual redundancy. At least under 4.2.x.
At anyrate, I am verifying my data backup and plan to upgrade tonight or tomorrow.
Thanks, Pete - schalliolAspirantNice. I didn't know there was that option.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWell there's a few ways to do it:
1. Put all the disks in and do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything)
2. Go to System > Volumes in the Dashboard
3. Click the X-RAID button and disable X-RAID if it is not disabled already by clicking on the X-RAID button and confirming you wish to disable it.
4. Destroy the volume
5. Create a new RAID-6 volume (best to still call this "data" - no quotes)
6. Click the X-RAID button to turn X-RAID back on
7. If you wish recreate the default shares and settings you could do this too
Or with X-RAID disabled you can choose to have the next disk added convert it to RAID-6, I think. I'm not sure of the steps for this, but I know it has been done. I'm hoping to look into this next week. - IridabikeAspirantInstalled 6.1.9 RC on my Pro 6 :
1)The fan now no longer gives the constant too slow or stopped warning but it has a slightly annoying hunting noise as it keeps switching speed when the system is not loaded. Is there anyway to dampen the response or set it so the speed changes are more gradual and not such a step change? As can be seen in the graph the control is not stable when lightly loaded. Assuming the fan control is based on a PID controller does anyone know where I can increase the integral part?
2)Bonjour to osx is much improved.
3) LCD dimming seems to be broken.
