Permission Question

RN214 OS 6.7.4

Accessing files over SMB

I have a "movies" share with folders and files inside. Is it possible to prevent a user/group from deleting non owned files/folders?

My issue is that my WDTVLiveHub needs write permission to catalog the movies. BUT I do not want the WDTV to be able to delete any of the movies on there.

The WDTVLiveHub logs into the NAS as user WDTV1 and is part of a group called "WDTV" (I have multiple WDTVLive devices.)

  • Hi,

Yes, this is possible but you need to use file permissions as well then. SMB permissions would not be granular enough to specify what you are after.

Look at the file permissions tab and un-check the box that grants rename and delete priviliges to non-owned files.

    Cheers

It should work SMB as well. It is file permissions so it shouldn't matter what protocol you use to access the files.

The reason AFP and NFS are mentioned is because for these the two protocols we typically restict individual access on the file level whereas for SMB we do it on the network level.

I don't see why this wouldn't work for SMB to be honest. You can test it out :)
