the readynas requires at least 1 disk to operate, so if you wanted to get everything upgraded I would stick *one* new disk in, let it initialize etc, then upgrade via frontview, reboot and make sure it comes back up with the current firmware and then you can add any remaining disks with the device powered down and factory default via frontview or boot menu (not sure the details on the x6 boot menu though).
