RAIDar 4.3.8 and JAVA
I have a ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Plus, and am running RAIDar 4.3.4
Several months ago, I removed (uninstalled) JAVA from my PC (runs Windows 7 64-bit) ... because of the numerous and frequent security issues in JAVA. I've had no problems associated with the removal of JAVA.
RAIDar 4.3.4 apparently has its own copy of JAVA and runs fine (granted the copy of JAVA that RAIDar 4.3.4 has is very old and subject to security issues).
I noticed that the description of RAIDar 4.3.8 says this: "No longer include JRE in Windows installer. RAIDar for all platforms now uses the JRE you have installed on your system.".
My question is: If I choose to install RAIDar 4.3.8, will I then be forced to re-install JAVA onto my computer?

- chirpaLuminaryIf you remove RAIDar 4.3.4 and upgrade fresh to 4.3.8, you will need system wide Java installed.
- zephAspirantThanks Chirpa.
I would rather not install system wide Java on my PC.
Currently, I am not experiencing any problems using RAIDar 4.3.4 ... are you aware of any serious problems/issues that I could encounter by electing to just remain on RAIDar 4.3.4?
EDIT: I noticed you said "If you remove RAIDar 4.3.4 and upgrade fresh to 4.3.8". Would there be any difference if I did not first remove RAIDar 4.3.4 and installed RAIDar 4.3.8 "over top"? - chirpaLuminaryYou can stick with that and should be fine. Not much has changed that I know of for the Ultra line, more to detect the RN OS6 systems I think.
- zephAspirantChirpa,
I added an EDIT to my last post ....

By doing that, could I avoid system wide Java installation and continue to use the (admittedly downlevel) Java currently installed with RAIDar 4.3.4?? - chirpaLuminaryNot sure, can give it a try and see. Doesn't look like the RAIDar developer is employed at NETGEAR anymore, so I doubt we'll see future updates to it. They moved to using ReadyCloud.netgear.com for the ReadyNAS OS 6 systems, not compatible with the older 4.x/5.x models.
- zephAspirantOK ....THANKS for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!
Think I'll just remain on 4.3.4 .... now if only I could turn off the "nag" pop-up asking me to upgrade :) - chirpaLuminaryTry renaming CheckUpgrade.exe or whatever its called in the program directory.
- zephAspirantChirpa,
A very logical suggestion ... but unfortunately it did not work.
I can live with the nag pop-up.
Thanks again for all of your help!! - Hotfire2000AspirantI have issues with RAIDar - Unable to delete/uninstall it and unable to start it up; I have the same JAVA issue as Zeph with a Windows 7 64bit laptop!
How can I remove the programme & reinstall 4.3.4? - chirpaLuminaryClick RAIDar Uninstall in the Programs start menu, or under Control Panel. Then download and install RAIDar 4.3.4.
