ReadyNas 102 xraid issue
Hi Guys, im a newbie with no previous experience with nas.
So, sorry if im asking dumb questions. im trying to get a clear answer for some of my question but its just all going over my head.
1. i got 2x2tb drives currently on xraid, i only want to have my "Photos" folder backed up on both drives ? and want to use the rest of the space.
Total space 4TB
Photos 1TB (copied on both drives so 2TB)
so i will have 2 TB to store my stuff that is not so important instead of my current setup where i only get 1 TB.
2. How does iscsi and Lun works? is there a easier explanation.
i know these questions are very basic but for a home user like me it is hard. thanks in advance 8)

- darkwellAspirantHi,
1. I don't have a ReadyNAS but read in the manual. I think it's not supported. What you need is a RAID 1 Volume using half of each drive and a RAID 0 volume using the other space. But with XRAID you can't configure that at all and in Flex Raid you can't use partitions but only whole drives. Linux can do that, so it could be possible using the command line, but that is for pro's and might lead to problems because scripts etc. do not expect that.
edit: You could use Raid 0 over both drives and manually backup your photos on an additional usb drive. For important data that is a good idea even if you had RAID 1. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User(1) xraid will not do what you want. You can use flex-raid to create multiple volumes. However, you will need to do a destroy your current xraid volume (and all the data on it) to get there.
The setup here: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=72067 is close to what you want. With 2 volumes, you create a Photos share on volume 1, and a Backup-Photos share on volume 2. Then schedule an hourly backup from Photos to Backup-Photos. That is not quite the same as mirroring, but it is close.
(2) The simple answer is that you don't need them. Just stick with shares.
