ReadyNAS 104 - Volume: Volume data health changed from Degraded to Dead
Hi there,
I have a ReadyNAS 104 that has reported the following in the log files:
| 10 Feb 2022 08:43:34 PM | Disk: Disk in channel 1 (Internal) changed state from RESYNC to ONLINE. | |
| 10 Feb 2022 08:42:15 PM | System: ReadyNASOS background service started. | |
| 10 Feb 2022 08:41:52 PM | Disk: Detected increasing ATA error count: [434] on disk 1 (Internal) [WDC WD30EFRX-68EUZN0, WD-WMC4N2936175] 5 times in the past 30 days. This condition often indicates an impending failure. Be prepared to replace this disk to maintain data redundancy. | |
| 10 Feb 2022 08:41:50 PM | System: ReadyNASOS service or process was restarted. | |
| 01 Feb 2022 08:04:37 PM | Disk: Disk in channel 1 (Internal) changed state from RESYNC to ONLINE. | |
| 01 Feb 2022 08:03:21 PM | System: ReadyNASOS background service started. | |
| 01 Feb 2022 03:00:13 AM | System: The system is shutting down. | |
| 31 Jan 2022 08:12:18 PM | Volume: Volume data health changed from Degraded to Dead. | |
| 31 Jan 2022 08:05:59 PM | Volume: Volume data health changed from Redundant to Degraded. | |
| 31 Jan 2022 08:02:04 PM | System: ReadyNASOS background service started. |
When I connect to the management page there is an alert message that says 'Remove inactive volumes to use the disk. Disk #1,2,3,4.
Under the Volumes tab it shows two volumes:
data-0, Data 8.17TB, Free Space: 0, Type: RAID 5
data, data 0, Free Space: 0, Type: RAID unknown
Note there is no critical data on this that I don't have another copy of somewhere else. I run Resilio Sync on it and auto sync selected folders (My Documents, My Pictures etc) from my PC and it's the 'backup of my backups', a bit of a dumping ground for when I just need some space to copy something for later.
While the above is true I'm keen to try to recover it anyway. Some of the 'dumping ground' stuff would be time consuming to recover, so I'm keen to see if I can bring this thing back to life.
The only other thing of note I can think of is that I was auto shutting this down at 3:00am and powering back up at 8:00pm, just to save on power when I'm not at home and needing Resilio to do anything. This is why the bottom entry in the logs says the service started at 08:02:04 PM on the 31st of January. Now I have left it powered up all the time.
I have a dump of the logs that I downloaded, however I do not have ssh access enabled as yet. When I try to enable it, it dumps me back to the account change password screen so I backed out of that.
Any help I can get with this would be much appreciated. Please let me know what else I can upload in order to help with the diagnosis, thank you.
Cheers,
Gary.

What are the smart stats on the disks? Disk 1 looks like it might be failing.
Also, what did you do to recover from the dead volume last January?

Disk 1 looks like this:
The other disks have error rates of Disk 2 = 225, Disk 3 = 197, Disk 4 = 271.
I haven't posted to this forum with a problem for several years, I did however comment a couple of times on another post where someone had had exactly the same error that went unresolved. Rather than keep adding to that one I was advised to create a new post with my issue.
I had a seperate issue several years ago that was resolved - I think someone remote connected to my NAS and fixed something from (aging) memory - however I have since removed those disks and effectively started afresh a few years ago with these WD Red disks.
Cheers,
Gary.

Can you download the log zip file, and the copy/paste disk_info.log in a reply?
