Readynas 104 reports Full Disks

Hi guys,

I have been reading this whole 16 page thread and almost feel that i got to know you by now.

Anyways, it has been very helpful to read about all of your attempts and "beta testing" so that I know what not to waste my time on.

As you probably understand, I have the same issues as you.

I have a 104 with 2x2TB and 2x4TB. The last one (which I will refer to as the 8TB disk from now on) is the buggy one.

The problem started when I decided to batch un-rar 5 TB of movies. It was working flawlessly uptil a few days ago, and now my drive is completely "clogged".

I simply cannot write files for more than a few seconds before it gives up. Depending on the SW in use, the error messages varies between "the network disk is no longer accessible" to "not enough storage" to "network name is already in use" and so forth.

- Downloading files from the internet, at 60 kB/s works for a few minutes than stops with one of the above error messages

- Unpacking more files also result in a crash. It may stop after 20% or 95%, this seems random. But it never finishes.

- Copying files using explorer does not work. "Disk is full"

- I have tried using two different Win7 machines and a Mac. No difference in result, but as mentioned, the error messages varies.

- Up til these attempts I thought it was some kind of a network problem or SMB-protocol problem, so I tried connecting it directly to a computer using the other NIC - but to no avail.

- Lastly I tried to move around 500GB from the 8TB drive (2x4tb) to the other RAID (4TB share of 2x2tb). I used the web interface for this operation and it worked flawlessly.

- I then unpacked the files in the 4TB share and prepared to move them back using the web interface.

- Which...... wait for it..........DID NOT WORK.

- I try to drag a folder from one share to the other share and the web interface is starting the move-process but gives up after 4 seconds with no error message.

Most of this was tried using OS 6.2. I have now upgraded to 6.2.5 but it did not change anything.

The 8TB share is about 50% full and does not allow me to write files for more than a few seconds before crashing.

However, i noticed in the log that the device has long been reporting "70% full", but right before this happened it reported "93%" full which is very strange as the unpacking process should not increase the space on the disk (the files had no compression, and each rar-archive was deleted after successful unpacking).

Windows also reported a pretty full disk, and i got no contact with the NAS. Also my username and password was invalid and i had to do a reinstalltion of the entire OS to get it up and running again.

But still, the 8TB share is useless now as i cannot append any files and i probably have to buy a new disk to store my files until this matter is resolved (i am strongly considering buying another NAS).

edit: I have added a screenshot to demonstrate the behaviour. This example is torrent files.

  • The volume was fully allocated and the metadata allocation was full.

Via Teamviewer I was able to change this and now a balance is running. As a balance has never successfully been run on the volume before this will take quite some time.

I would recommend scheduling a balance to run every few weeks or so at a time when the NAS is being used lightly.

You posted your reply on a long dead thread (ended January 2014).  So I moved it here.

Did you set up these two volumes as RAID-0?  What firmware are you running.

Also can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

        Thank you StephenB and mdgm.

The current NAS firmware is 6.2.5 (upgraded from 6.2 during my efforts).

        Both volumes are RAID-0.

The logs are sent as instructed.

I also wish to say that after reading the original thread which I posted in, my impression is that the customer service today has improved significantly since then.

        Way to go :)

  • Hello mdgm,

I did A balance during my own testing and troubleshooting. It did not resolve the problem.
    Same for defragmentation.

Didn't the logs I sent show that?

Ah, I see you ran a balance and that finished very quickly.

It may need to be balanced manually from the backend.
