ReadyNAS 1500 Blank Front View
Hello. We have a ReadyNAS 1500 that was working well until today. HDD 4 showed a blinking light so the unit was powered down. Upon powering the unit back up, FrontView allows you to log in (http:...

You've got a bad disk (probably disk 4). I've sent you a PM with details that should help you confirm which disk it is.

Hello chrispiner,
I have some questions to ask, I have summarized them below:
- Does RAIDar still detect the NAS?
- If so, what does it say?
- Can you still access the shares through Windows explorer?
- What is the current firmware version?
- How many disks are inserted?
- Do you have backup of the data?
It is possible that there is more than 1 disk causing the problem to access the NAS.
Welcome to the community!

Thanks for your reply.
- RAIDar does still detect the NAS and labels it as: Volume C: RAID Level X2. Not Redundant. A disk failure will render this volume dead.
- We can still access the shares through Windows Explorer
- The current firmware version is 4.2.19
- There are 4 disks in the NAS, all of size 2TB.
- There is no backup of this data :smileymad:
Thanks!
Chris

Or rather, there isn't yet. There will be very shortly!

Current firmware is 4.2.30, you might want to upgrade to that after the problem is resolved.
When was the last time you successfully accessed the admin interface?
- chrispinerJan 05, 2017Aspirant
Initially, it looked as though it had no issues with any as it showed 4 HDDs with green ticks on them all. However, on hovering, it shows 6 ATA errors on disk 3 and no data at all for disk 4, showing just 'Channel 4: 0'
We last accessed the admin panel on Tuesday. After a reboot, the admin panel was no longer accessible.

That rules out a browser compatibility issue, which is good. With some old firmware you need to browse the NAS in compatibility mode.
There are several possibilities on the admin ui issue, but my guess is that error logs are filling the OS partition.

Obviously getting the backup finished is the first priority. After that you might confirm that disk 4 is dead (for instance connect it to a PC with a USB adapter and run vendor tools - seatools for seagate, lifeguard for western digital, ...) I'd also test disk 3 the same way.
A factory reset/rebuilding the NAS (with healthy disks) is of course one way to get it back up again. Although it takes the longest, there is no wasted time in experimentation.
Paid support is of course another option - they can access it remotely if you boot up in tech support mode, and potentially get it back running more quickly.
If you are skilled with linux commands, you can also boot in tech support mode and access the NAS with telnet. Cleaning out logs in the OS partition isn't that difficult, but other issues are probably best left to tech support.
