Ok. The WD60EFAX is SMR, so not a good choice. But the WD60EFRX should be fine.
I do recommend removing the partitions in the windows disk manager. Maybe also test it with WD's dashboard utility while it is connected.
If the partitions are all removed, then the NAS should automatically do a factory install when the system powers up. No need to use the boot menu.

By the way it keeps showing Corrupt root! I cant work out how to get rid of this stupid message!
Does your NAS say
- ReadyNAS Duo on the front panel? or
- ReadyNAS Duo v2 on the front panel?
Please ignore other labels for this check. Operation of the boot menu is a bit different, depending on what you have.

I removed the HDD too and formatted them in windows
FWIW, a bad idea. The NAS doesn't use the file systems used in Windows. What disk model are you using?

Hi Stephen!
Just says ReadyNAS on the front, underneath its Model No.: RND-2A and RNDP2000 as well as RNDP2230-100NAS

Ok. Then this is a ReadyNAS Pro 2. Instructions for the boot menu are on pages 14-15 here:
Do the factory default.
This model can be converted to run OS-6 (current firmware) if you wish. Though it's possible the previous owner already did this, so probably best to circle back to that after you get the NAS running.
If your NAS is still running 4.x firmware, then you will not be able to connect to the admin page with most browsers. Browsers have recently dropped support for TLS 1.0 (which is all OS-4 supports). You can connect with Internet Explorer or Edge in IE mode. Another option is to download an older version of FireFox, and configure it to not autoupdate. 94.0.2 works (among other versions).
Converting to OS-6 would eliminate the browser problem, and also provide SMB 3 support (among other things).

It must still be running v4 because I cant get to the admin page in IE or Edge IE mode.
I tried the factory reset - once I run this mode - how do I know the reset is complete? Does it reboot automatically or do I need to reboot it myself?
Can I jump to OS6 manually somehow?
Thanks

You can't get to the admin page because the OS isn't properly installed on the disks (that is the significance of the corrupt root).
The error due to TLS 1.0 would either refer to the SSL protocol or a Cipher mismatch.

After you start the reset, there will be a 5-10 minute delay before it begins. The process will include reformatting the disk and installing the OS. The NAS won't need to be rebooted afterwards.
Unfortunately, there is no simple way to tell it is finished. You could try accessing the admin web page after 15-30 minutes - that likely will be more than long enough if you are only using a single disk.

Get the NAS running first, and then we can talk about the conversion. One aspect is that I do strongly recommend upgrading the RAM in the Pro 2 before converting it. And as I mentioned, it might already be running OS-6.
