ReadyNAS 214 available on local network but will not connect to internet

Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone can help point me in the right direction here. I have had my ReadyNAS 214 server for over a year now with no problems but last week I noticed I was unable to access it across the internet while still being able to access it from within the network, while it had been fine the day before. I am running firmware 6.6.0 which did not update to cause this issue (have been running it for a while) and my router hasn't updated firmware (it is a sky router SR101 firmware 3.48.1140.R).

In trying to trouble shoot, I have discovered that on rebooting the server it will be available online for around 30mins before dropping off again. Rebooting is the only way I have found to get it to work. The server logs show nothing apart from "System: Cannot download application list. Please check your internet connection and try again later" and like errors.

I believe that there must be some problem between the server and the router (a DNS issue or something?) but I am not a network engineer and have not found a solution either elsewhere on this forum on online.

I have tried to edit the Network options (it had been using DHCP on IP4 and automatically/Dynamic configure on IP6) but no combination works. I have also checked the settings on the router but, not really knowing what to try I haven't changed anything there.

Can anyone offer any advice with this?

Thanks

How are you accessing the NAS remotely?  ReadyCloud?  Or some other way?

If your local network is IPv4 (usually the case) you should disable IPv6 on the ReadyNAS configuration.   Otherwise you will see performance issues, esp. with Windows 10.

DHCP with IPv4 is what you should be using.  You could also use IP address reservation in the router- which would make sure the RN214 always gets the same local IP address from the router. Sky has a guide for that here: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/content/180-ip-address-reservation.html

Try adding 8.8.8.8 (Google's DNS server) to the NAS list of IPv4 DNS servers, and see if that solves the problem (and resolves the "cannot download application list).

      Thanks for the quick reply!

I run this as a server for Plex and primarily access the server through the Plex app - I had originally noticed that this app was only available through the local network and not over the internet which is how I discovered this problem. I did afterwards see the same issue via ReadyCloud.

I have made the changes you have suggested (disabled IPv6, setup an IP reservation on the router and added Google DNS Server to the NAS) but the same problems exist even after complete reboot of both the server and router :(

I did notice that after reboot of the server, the settings reverted to the default (IPv6 was re-enabled and the Google DNS address was missing) - I have reset this but is this to be expected?

      Thank you

No its not, and that means something is likely wrong.
