ReadyNAS 314 "Boot Device Error"
Hello,
I have a ReadyNAS 314 which has given sterling service for a number of years and has now been relegated to secondary duties. It stores a weekly offsite rsync-over-ssh backup of my primary ReadyNAS 424 but all the data is also safely backed up elsewhere.
The last time the 314 was rebooted it failed to come up. The LCD briefly flashes the "NETGEAR Storage Welcome" message followed by "BOOT DEVICE ERROR". The power LED continues to flash and the activity light illuminates but nothing further happens and no sign of BIOS initialisation appears if a monitor is connected to the HDMI output during an attempted boot. This is regardless of the presence or absence of any hard disks. Normally it contains 4x 4TB WD Red disks - these have been removed, non-destructively tested with manufacturer's utility and the complete X-RAID array transferred into another ReadyNAS 314 - they all work fine, as does the PSU of the failed ReadyNAS 314. Unsurprisingly it no longer appears on the network and doesn't show itself to RAIDar. It's completely unresponsive to an attempted USB recovery undertaken with a suitably prepared, tested and working USB key containing firmware 6.10.5 in the front USB2 port.
This failed ReadyNAS 314 was last running firmware 6.10.3. In fact it was temporarily taken out of service in order to install 6.10.4 but before the firmware update was even attempted it failed to boot. It's long out of its 5 year warranty as it was purchased in 2014.
I'm guessing this is terminal, but fortunately I've lost no data and I've certainly had my money's worth from the device. If there is anything I can do to revive it I'd be pleased to hear this - I know there are many extremely helpful and expert enthusiasts within the ReadyNAS community. I'm reasonably technically competent and relatively at home with BIOS reflashing etc., within a Linux environment, so this might help.
Many thanks for any assistance offered,

When you say the USB recovery key was "tested", do you mean it successfully did a recovery on another unit of the same type (Intel based native OS6 unit)? If so, then it sounds like the internal flash is faulty. If not, double-check that you did create it right. You can try another USB device, but the native OS6 units are not nearly as finicky about that as the legacy ones.

Thanks for your rapid and helpful reply Sandshark. I had used this same USB key to perform a full USB recovery on yet another ReadyNAS 314 some time ago. This was with I think firmware 6.7.2 or thereabouts when that was current. Having established that it worked then, I labelled and stored the USB key since I knew that not all keys would function for USB recovery. Before I tried to use it this time I used the Windows USB Recovery tool and firmware 6.10.5 to reformat and update it. I'm fairly sure I did this correctly, but I'll retry USB recovery with a selection of keys from my desk drawer. It's always possible that the stored key I tried is itself failing.
If it should turn out that the internal flash is faulty is there anything else I can attempt?
Thanks again,

If the flash is bad, there is nothing you can do about it, unfortunately.
