readynas 316 failed password reset
Hi All,
I seem to have forgotten my admin password (which is weird as i'm sure I know what it is it simply isnt working).
Problem is if I use the password reset function I get a "recover password failed" error message. I'm guessing there is an issue with the email address I have set up.
If I try to boot into boot mode and then reinstall the firmware then I get to the "Boot Menu" screen but the touch pad is unresponsive. so I can't select anything.
Anyone with any thoughts on how to proceed? Should I try USB recovery?
Thanks

I assume you are past warranty, as an RMA to fix the front panel is the obvious best choice.
USB recovery restores the flash memory, your problem is on the OS partition of the drives. Just in case you actually did do an OS re-install and don't realize it, did you try the default password of "password"?
Can you still access the data with a non-admin log-in? If you can, the brute force method would be to copy off the data, delete all partitions on all the drives with a PC, then install them again. The system will automatically do a factory default and you can restore the data.
If you know somebody with an OS6 ReadyNAS with enough drive bays, you could install the drives into it and do an OS re-install.

The boot menu not working could indicate a range of things.
Have you checked your disks to see if any of them are bad using the disk manufacturer's tool? e.g. SeaTools for SeaGate disks or WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for WD disks?
It's possible a problem with the internal flash could prevent the boot menu from working in which case USB Boot Recovery would help. - ShepRCSAspirant
Thanks both.
I can acess the data with other logins so the brute force method may work. However painful trying to scrape together that much storage.
Having said that I hadn't considered a hardware replacement. Just checked and my HW warranty expires 2020 so have raised a ticket!
Will see where we get to from there. Thanks
