ReadyNas 6.2 (NAS locks up entirely)
EDIT BY MODERATOR: Please see the post at the end of the thread: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=456217#p456217
I guess i am not the only one this is happening to!
everything worked fine for 6.1.9 (except for my root at 99% problem last month)
once I updated, I transferred aprox 2 gigs of information it locks up every time
all apps are working fine.
as a business owner i have come to the conclusion (with the amount of problems i have been having) ReadyNas is not meant for a reliable means of backing up seems majority of the fixes are "back everything up and factory reset!" I think that answer is as good as telling someone with computer problems to hit there computer a few times and see if it works.
now i have gone to support many times yes they are quite helpful but only within 90 days of purchase of the unit! then they insist that i pay for a extension of that support.... i have 3 IBM servers and when there hardware fails (one little problem with a driver one year later) they back up the reseller in making sure my system is back up and running within 48 hours (no they are not leased or have a protection plan)
If it wasent for the guys in the forums i would have beaten the system with a bat (please see Office space the movie)... sorry for the rant just truly frustrated with the system

- Just to add, I've not had another crash on 6.2.2 since the last one I reported a long time above.
I never used any installed apps. I never used disk spin down or AV.
The only change I know I made was to disable DLNA...this seemed to be bogging things down a lot.
As things are stable, I'm not keen to try another beta. - guenterp62Aspirant

I also deactivated readyDLNA, and I deleted all snapshots and turned snapshots off. Antivirus is disabled as well and no apps are installed or running
... still I had a system freeze again today.
I'm gonna throw this unit out of the window - kplatteAspirant

What apps do you have installed?
No apps installed here - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe next beta (Beta 3) should have some logging improvements. Some fresh logs after updating to that (once it is available) would be good. Please also mention in your email roughly when the NAS locked up.
- sauronekAspirantAnother freeze
No snapshot, no AV, no disk spin down, no DLNA.
Apps: MySQL, phpMyAdmin, Plex (but turn off).
I watching movie (stream from NAS) and NAS freeze.
I can't ping, SSH, no reaction to power button. - tlvgAspirantHere's my experience over the last week for what it's worth.
I have the RN104 with four 2TB drives. It has 5.3TB of space of which 3.4 is used. I went from 6.1.9 to 6.2.2 a little over a week ago. Immediately after updating I started experiencing the lock ups described in this thread. I turned off snapshots as suggested but to no avail.
After a few days of this the beta came out and I decided to get a current backup of the nas before trying it. One thing I noticed is that on my sons share he had a folder with a ton of old Minecraft saves and various associated files. It totalled to just under 200,000 small files. Since he is not actively accessing them, just keeping them for archive purposes, I took the whole folder and created one big rar archive, then deleted the folder (with no snapshot of it). After that, I copied all the rest of the files on the nas over to a 4TB backup drive. That took quite a while to complete and a few days went by before I got back around to putting the beta on. Oddly since I removed that large folder it has not gone down at all, so I have not yet installed the beta.
This experience leads me to believe there may be some issue with a very large amount of small files on 6.2.2 which worked fine on 6.1.9. - yajdamAspirantMy one year old RN10400 does the same thing since 6.2.0. Locks up and I have to take the power cord and plug it back in to get the RN10400 working.
I've also added to etc/sysctl.conf "kernel.panic = 1" and "kernel.panic_on_oops = 1". Sometimes it works, sometimes the RN10400 reboots, but gets stuck at "booting".
Setup: Almost a "Vanilla" RN10400 with 4x2TB WD hard drives and a UPS, with AD sync for accounts. Http, https, SMB, and NFS are enabled. 99% free space.
No AV, no apps, no snapshots, no bit-root, no ethernet bond, no scheduled action, no disk spin-down, no power timer, no WOL. Readycloud, ReadyNAS Remote and ReadyNAS Replicate, never used.
What I've done:
1-Reinstalled the OS. (No success. Still locks up)
2-Tested the Hard drives using WD tool (All OK)
3-Factory reset. (No success. Still locks up)
4-Formated the hard drives (using ReadyNAS gui) and made a new Raid5 using X-Raid. (No success. Still locks up)
5-Formated the hard drives (using ReadyNAS gui) and made a new Raid10 using X-Raid. (No success. Still locks up)
6-Changed the hard drives slots. (No success. Still locks up)
7-Formated the hard drives (using ReadyNAS gui) and made a new Raid5 not using X-Raid. (No success. Still locks up, but during the rebuild that took more than 330 hours, the RN10400 never locked up. After the rebuild was done, it locked up after 10 minutes or so)
8-Installed ReadyNAS 6.2.3-T1652 beta 2 (Waiting for results...) (8 hours and still no lock up. Starting to copy stuff)
Ok, ReadyNAS 6.2.3-T1652 beta 2 lasted around 33 hours until first freeze. Going for the second run...
Conclusion of 6.2.3-T1652 trial: After the initial 33 hours, the RN10400 has locked 2 to 3 times a day, but the editing of etc/sysctl.conf with "kernel.panic = 1" and "kernel.panic_on_oops = 1" is working great, so I'm considering ReadyNAS 6.2.3-T1652 with kernel options a temporary workaround.
What the hell is happening?! What more can I do?! Give up, activate the warranty and send it to repair?! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThese issues do not appear to be hardware related.
After we release a beta 3 it would be helpful if you could update to that and if it still locks up, send in your logs mentioning the rough time of the lockup in the email. - abcd12341AspirantI've the same problem and try all method described in this forum with no success. I've given up and move to a new NAS. Just login to check if Netgear actually willing to fix the problem they have created. Well, look like not much improvement.
I believe Netgear should have done the followings:
1) Remove 6.2.0, 6.2.1 & 6.2.2 from download with a message telling user of 6.1.x not to upgrade.
2) Create a routine or get support to help people of 6.2.x to revert back to 6.1.x (instead of the excuse of you only have 90 days support)
3) Fix the problem before re-release the new firmware. - yajdamAspirant

Ok, I'll send the logs. Is there an ETA for the ReadyNAS 6.2.3 beta 3?
With ReadyNAS 6.2.3-T1652 beta 2 it has been 8 hours and still no lock up. I'm starting to copy stuff.
