ReadyNAS 626X stuck as "NETGEAR Storage Welcome" message

Well, as it says in the title.

Cannot get into the boot menu with the "paperclip" approach nor the USB recovery by holding down the OK button.

Power supply seems OK, fan is running and the backplane SATA lights (all 6) light up.Disks seem to go through their internal POST but clearly the system doesn't get as far as starting to read the boot information from the disks.

I've looked at this thread:

https://community.netgear.com/t5/New-ReadyNAS-Users-General/ReadyNAS-314-Stuck-on-Welcome-Screen/td-p/2275004

and I've managed to carefully open up the box and re-seat the DIMMs. Have tried removing one of the two DIMMS and I don't even get a "Memory Error" on the display.

Any thoughts and suggestions from the community would be welcome.

I do have (nearly) everything backed up (nightly ReadyDR) on another ReadyNAS - so second question would be what to replace the 626X with (if I can't kick it back into life)? QNAP or Sysology?

What happens if you power down, remove all the disks, and then power up again (diskless)?

I suggest labeling the disks by slot as you remove them.

Same result. Just sits there with the welcome message.

I've tried the original 6 disk array, one scratch disk and diskless. All the same outcome.

Does the fan calm down, or stay at full speed?  Do you see any activity in the LAN LED?

There are a number of things that can cause this.  The simplest is that the flash has become corrupt and a USB recover will get you going.  Something on one of the power busses might also be at fault.  That's repairable only if it's the supply itself, which is unlikely given the age of a 626X.  If Netgear would release schematics, more would be repairable, but they have not.

I have a 428 I took in trade that acts very similarly.  I thought maybe I could fix it, but only valued it as a parts unit.  It has a dead short on the 3.3V rail I have been unable to find.  It's likely a capacitor, but I've not figured out which one.  So, that's your worst-case scenario.

If you aren't actually using the 10G Ethernet, then there are a lot of units you could replace this with -- all used, of course.  But if you really need 10G, your pickings are going to be slim unless you are up for a small project.  A 10G Intel NIC can be made to work in a 516.

The fan stays at a constant (balanced?) speed.

I'm not using the 10G LAN, the 1G LAN port flashes green (approx 1Hz).

I've followed the published Netgear recovery steps, i.e. powering on with the USB drive in the front socket, waiting for the function buttion lights to go out and then holding the OK button in for c. 30s. The activity LED on the USB drive does NOT start to flash, which would indicate that it's not getting as far as reading the USB drive.
