The right procedure is the one in the hardware manual I linked in above.
If the LEDS didn't flash, then you didn't do an OS reinstall. If you held reset too long (~25 seconds) you'd see a second LED flash, and then you'd have done a factory reset (which would wipe your data).
There are other modes you can end up in if you aren't careful (particularly if the reset button isn't actually pressed in by the paper-clip), which is why I linked in the manual.
Anyway, you should be able to log in. I'd try powering down the NAS (not holding down the power button, just pressing it), and then restarting it. If you still can't log in, you can try the OS reinstall again.
Do you have a full backup? Wiping the disks and rebuilding the NAS from scratch is another approach. And of course you should have a backup anyway.
To perform an OS reinstall...
1.Power off your system.
2.Using a straightened paper clip, press and hold the Reset button.
3. Press and release the Power button to power on the system.
4. To perform an OS reinstall, continue to hold the Reset button until all Disk LEDs flash once, after about 5 seconds, and then release the button.
