ReadyNAS Duo DLNA server = crap (or am I wrong?)
Just thought I would like to share this info with others, if the moderators will post this......
I have been having problems with DLNA serving to Win7 WMP12 machines in my house. After 3 months of trying to get a straight answer, this is the reply...
As far as I can tell, the ReadyNAS Duo is not fully DLNA compliant. Again, on Netgears website for the ReadNAS Duo.....see the key words DLNA Compatible.......
Media Streaming
DLNA Compatible UPnP AV
Logitech SqueezeBox
SONOS Digital Music Center
Network DVD player compatible
Windows MCE compatible
Sony Playstation 3
Microsoft XBOX 360
Media Streaming
AND.......the device is not listed on http://www.dlna.org either.
We all got duped if we thought it was DLNA complaint. I gather compliant and "compatible" are different

I have read your case and understand that you are experiencing some problems with your ReadyNAS wherein ReadyDLNA is not working through WMP12. I apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced. Since we are doing this online, it may require a few e-mail exchanges before we can resolve the issue. Please be assured that I will do my best effort to help resolve your case in the least amount of time.
To answer your query, this particular concern is happening not only with WMP but also to other ReadyDLNA server due to compliance issue, meaning this is not yet DLNA certified.

- marktb1961AspirantCan't say if you're right or not but only to add I have had a similar experience with an apparent compatibility issue between my ReadyNas NVX and 2010 model Sony Bravia TV. An issue I logged on the ReadyNas forums has gone unanswered for several weeks, presumably because once Netgear has sold their re-packaged freeware (such as I understand the DLNA plug-in to be), any problems belong to the customers.
Unfortunately the state of DLNA seems to be a win for marketing by the suppliers and a big lose for customers who can be simply ignored or bounced between the suppliers when a compatibility issue arises. In the case of Netgear it looks like there is zero interest in a customer's experiences with interoperability of the ReadyNas line with client devices. Quite an indictment considering that's the whole promise of DLNA.
Overall I am happy with the ReadyNas but I hope I don't need Netgear's support on a critical issue anytime soon. - fab4272AspirantWell, I have been told by Netgear tech's that the Duo is DLNA compatible, not compliant. What a play on words that is. Also, they state that Win7 is not DLNA compliant as well. But to state that it is compatible with Media center is also misleading as the share feature does not work properly due to DLNA issues.
So, there final word was that WIn7 is to blame as it is not DLNA compliant either.
And no, the solution is not to use CFS. I could if I would, but why state the device works as a DLNA server when it has flaws....
No more Netgear products for me. It took 4-5 months to get them to state all this. - wixiAspirantsounds like Netgear's definition of 'quiet'.
when i complained that the noise my Duo made was nothing like i'd expect it to be given the glossy Flash pictures of it sat in the living room, and the decription of the developer sleeping with one to prove it was near silent, i was told categorically that 'no one else in Europe' had complained about the fan noise of the Duo.
i too will never buy any netgear product either for myslef or my company. - I think you will find that DLNA across the board has interoption problems with any combination of supposedly compatible or compliant devices and servers.
Meaning, it isn't just readydlna, but the entire dlna/upnp ecosystem leaves much to be desired.
Readydlna does work for the most part, but it is more dependent of the client your using to access it.
Readydlna does not do any transcoding, so whatever client your using must support the file types your trying to stream via readydlna.
None of you have spelled exactly what your attempting to do or stream via readydlna.
If your attempting to play files via readydlna which do not play in WMP12 by itself, then that is your problem.
Otherwise, post specifics of what your doing, what your using, and what your trying to accomplish. - fab4272AspirantFair point, I should have been more specific.
It is a visibility problem. I have more than 14000 photo's on my NAS, but when trying to view them via WMP12, I can never see them all. The total count is approx half of what I have stored on it. - gringinaldAspirantHi there, I have also recently purchased a DLNA compliant Denon DBP1611-UD Blu Ray player which can occasionally see the ReadyNAS when the moons are all in phase.
I understand that there may be issues with other products however from my experience it seems that whatever functionality the ReadyNAS duo uses to broadcast itself as being readable using DLNA is patchy at best.
Rather than it being issues with specific files, I can either see or not see the ReadyNAS Duo on an inconsistent basis.
Is there anything which can be done to resolve this issue TeknoJnky or Skywalker?
Thanks in advance. - sphardy1Apprentice

Such symptoms are usually, not always, caused by networking issues - often a dodgy cheap ISP provided router being the culprit - rather than an issue with either the Duo, DLNA server or the client (your BR player).
The only way to be sure is to directly connect the client to the Duo with a single ethernet cable - no switch, no router, no wireless functionality enabled (if any) - and retest. If the problem remains you know for sure that the fault is in one of 3 places - the client, the Duo or the cable connecting them together. But you will probably find the problem disappears confirming this to be a networking issue
Help on directly connecting to a NAS can be found here - gringinaldAspirantHi Sphardy, looking around forums and elsewhere I've seen that twonky has been used successfully for streaming so before messing around with multiplugs etc. (maxed out in my current Home Cinema config!) as a quick armchair test I downloaded the eval copy and installed to the ReadyNAS - lo and behold my problem has disappeared.... I've now purchased for 15 notes and it has worked like a charm ever since. I'm happily watching my home movies through my DBP-1611 from my NAS without a problem.
Guess my issue probably was due to the ReadyDLNA software.... appreciate that it could have been anything from a purist's fault-finding point of view though.
Thanks for the response anyway. - wixiAspirantI have the opposite problem.
with my Roberts 83i, i can connect wirelessly and seamlessly to my ReadyNAS Duo running DLNA.
my copy of Twonky comes and goes like Donovan's "There is A Mountain ...".

very Zen but Very Annoying
:? - kllngtmeAspirantNot sure if you've been on the dlna page recently, but 99% of the Readynas line IS listed under the product search. The Duo isn't listed though...
You are right though, the dlna server on the duo is complete garbage. im planning on buying a pro soon, hoping it will fix all the issues with it.
