ReadyNas Duo, DLNA Streaming Music plays in wrong order

I wish to use my ReadyNas Duo NAS to stream music to my recently purchased Roberts 83i streaming radio. When I use the DLNA Server in the ReadyNas to stream to the Roberts, Album, Artists and TRACKS are ALL displayed in alphabetic order. I want tracks to be displayed and played in Track order, not alphabetically. There is no way to change the sort order on the Roberts.

However, if I use Windows Media Player 12 on my laptop to stream music to the Roberts, it displays and plays as required, i.e. Albums and Artists alphabetically, and Tracks in Track order.

For some time I have been streaming music to my Playstation 3. I use both the ReadyNas and Windows Media Player on my laptop. In both cases tracks are displayed and played in Track order.

In summary:
ReadyNas to Roberts plays tracks in Alphabetic order
WMP 12 to Roberts plays tracks in Track order
ReadyNas to Playstation plays tracks in Track order
WMP12 to Playstation plays tracks in Track order

Which system is causing the Roberts to display and play tracks in alphabetic order? Is it the ReadyNAS DNLA Server, or the Roberts Client?
How can I get my Roberts to play in Track order when streaming from the ReadyNas?
I would appreciate your help,
Thanks

Geoff

  • Can someone help?

Would I be able to control the order of Tracks displayed on the Roberts if I installed a different music Server on the Duo? If so, is there a recommended Server I should install?

    Thanks

    Not sure.

But one way to force the order is to re-tag your tracks so the title starts with the track number. (also start the file name itself with the track number). You need to use 01 for 1, otherwise you get 1, 10, 2, ....

This is somewhat tedious, but not quite as bad as it sounds, as there are some tag packages that let you do bulk renaming (and retagging). Anyway, then you get the right order no matter what player / server combination you use.
  • Hi StephenB,

Thanks for your reply. I've been coming around to the same conclusion re editing the track titles. Most of my music comes from CDs that I own which I ripped using Nero - some years back. That did not put track numbers at the beginning of the track titles.

Recently I've ripped a few more CDs using Exact Audio Copy, and I see that it has put track numbers at the beginning of the track titles. I'll check to see if EAC can easily tag my existing MP3s. If not, does a suitable program for track title editing come to mind?

I'm a little concerned that if I install another server on the ReadyNas Duo, I might find that I introduce other problems. At least I can currently play my music from the NAS - dont want to sabotage that!!

    Thanks again

Mediamonkey is popular (though I haven't used it myself). I am using tagscanner at the moment, which works but is sometimes a bit quirky.

With many of these tools, the quickest thing is to use their file renamer process (which lets you create file names from the existing tags info - for instance %track%-%title%.mp3). Then rebuild the titles from the file names in a second step. This is definitely quicker than re-ripping.
