readynas duo v2 disk failed ..

hi guys not completely familiar with all this so i need some advice please. I have a very old readynas duo thats been chugging along for years, however, one of the drives have failed (2 Gb) so maybe a couple of daft questions, if i replace the failed drive with a good one will it rebuild the info with it being raid (set up on default from what i remember) if not is there anyway to read or recover the date easily?  the tools out there are pretty expensive and as im a pensioner its not worth the cost.

Ive read conflicting articles that say d a factory reset but surely that will erase my data?

any advice/help greatly appreciated..

many thanks

I can access the working disk and have backed up the items i need from that, but not the faulty one

By default these NAS are set up with only one volume. The two disks are mirrored, so you would already have offloaded all the files on the NAS from the working disk.

Are you saying you were using FlexRAID with two JBOD volumes set up?  If so, there is nothing to sync.  Inserting a new drive would let you set up a new volume, but you can not recover any data from the faulty drive - there is nothing to recover it from.  That would explain your symptoms.

You could try R-linux for Windows on a PC (freeware), and see if that can access the faulty drive.  Or try a data recovery service.  But if the drive has actually failed, then even professional recovery is unlikely to get you much (if anything), and it would be quite expensive.

Also noticed taking these out, the release catches dont work anymore, the caddies are getting harder and harder to remove. one is harder to insert to, but i can see no obstructions.

The Duo's trays can be hard to remove.  There are two options.

The first is to insert a push pin in the center of the circular release button ("A" in the diagram).  While some have had success with that method, it hasn't worked well for me.

The second is to insert a small screwdriver (or maybe an unbent paper clip) through the hole at one of the two points labeled "B".  Pull it downwards toward the release button.  This releases the latch mechanism, and is the method I use.

I don't know what you can do to deal with your insertion problem.

There are still some replacement trays for sale on ebay and similar sites.  There is a newer tray that has a square release - that doesn't have the issues the original ones have.  But those are quite pricey, so IMO a questionable investment given that we are talking about a ~15 year old NAS.

  • Hi guys, followed sandsharks advice and its clean and verified. just inserted the drive once again and this time raidar says its healthy but as yet no drives showing, but i can still access the files on the first working drive!  not sure if thats what usually happens so i'll just leave it. when i run the admin page its showing nothing at present. Again not sure if thats normal or not,

Did you do it all with power on, as I recommended?   You are not getting a full display of the UI.  That could be because the sync is ongoing and taking too much CPU time.  But if that's the case, you should be seeing a lot of drive activity.

yes i followed your instructions when i removed and reinserted the drive, the power was on all the time. the disk leds are as follows, disk 1 lit, (as it was previously, this is the one i could access) disk 2 led is flashing, which if i read the manual right is failed, removed or re syncing.
What concerns me is that it does seem to be in as far as disk 1.. but theyre both fitted into the caddys exactly the same. Would swapping there positions cause problems if theyre syning?
how long does this normally take bearing in mind theye only 2tb drives?

By "flashing", do you mean what looks like drive access (thus, could be syncing), or just a regular pattern of flashes?  If it's syncing, both drives need to be accessed, so it sounds like something else is wrong.  Interrupting a sync is not recommended, but isn't as big an issue with a RAID1 as RAID5.

It is possible that the chassis is what failed, not the drive, which could account for your issue.  Can you test the drive you removed and see it it's really bad?

  • drive 2 (which had the problems) is flashing constantly. drive one is steady. Im not sure if thats how its supposed to be. When you say chassis has failed are we talking about the main unit (case) or the drive bay chassis? I did test the drive as you suggested previously, but i can remove it and test again. I also thought of swapping the drives, i.e. putting the disk in drive position 1 into 2 and vise versa. that would give me an indication as to wether the interface has problems.

That said, just checked the admin page and now its showing 'system error please contact customer support! '

What is the model of the replacement disk?

        Guide

seagate baracuda, like the original. Its the only one i had available and i wanted to recover my data if possible till i bought a better unit (and disks based on sandsharks info earlier) or tried truenas etc as alternatives.

  • hi guys looks like all that support and advice you both gave me has paid off! I have the drive back up and running again. Its resynced last night, and this morning everything seems fine, so many thanks for the input and advice both of you gave me, its much appreciated, and ive learned a lot in the process. Once again many thanks
