ReadyNas NV+ / corrupt root & no option for raid

Hello All,

I just recently purchased a diskless ReadyNas NV+ and am running into some issues.

1st issue is. I put in a 1TB (on the hardware list) drive. the Nas booted fine and was able to get into the FrontView with no problems. updated the firmwire to the newest version. now the issue being it never asked me what kind of raid i wanted to setup. so going ot the Volumns section it shows the HD but nothing about setting up or creating a useable raid.

reading the help document it seems that it should have asked first load of the FrontView what kind of raid I wanted. but never did. should i just reset the nas to factory defaults and try again?

2nd issue is. i put in a 2TB Drive (seagate, not on the hardware list). if the drive is in the nas alone it gives a "invalid firmware" on the lcd display and "corrupt root" on the RAIDiator. but if i put it in with the 1TB drive. the Nas boots fine and FrontView shows both drives. also tried to format the drive in windows and it got stuck at 38% (after 6 hours). would this imply the drive is bad?

Thanks

  • The default is X-RAID. During the initial setup, you have 10 minutes to change the settings using RAIDar (see http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=425 on how to change it to FlexRAID 0, 1 or 5).

You can check the setting by using RAIDar and hovering over the "Volume" column or going into Frontview and looking at the main screen. In the example below, you can see that my 6-bay Pro is configured for X-RAID2, it's redundant and has 1490 GB used of 2287 GB (65%):

As for problem #2, I also suspect a bad disk. Try following these instructions for testing: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=388
  • Hi dbott,

I am good with having it as x-raid. since i only have 2 drives at the moment (plan on getting 2 more).

your images did'nt come thru (but looking at your link, Step #5) shows the following on my screen (at work so i cant screen capture):

Disk Space 0 MB (0%) of 0 GB used

    Rad Settings tab

Configuration: None (i believe it says none)

shows the 1TB HD but only has the Locate button showing.

so that is why im wondering if i shouldnt just reset to factory since something seems to be going wrong (it does say 960/960 gigs on the LCD display)

i will run the seagate tool on that hd when i get home to see if it fails.

Was the 1TB disk used at all by a PC before being put in the NAS? If so, this could be causing issues.

Before putting a disk in the NAS it's best to delete the partitions on it. The NAS needs to format a disk.

It still would be a good idea to check the health of the disks as dbott67 suggested.

WD's LifeGuard has a quick erase which ensures the Nas won't be fooled by old partitions.

It also has generic short and long tests, so you can check the drive while you are at it.
  • mdgm,

thats what i tried last night after seeing it on a post or page. i went in an deleted the partitions on the 1tb and did a seatools test on the 2tb. also just to be safe a factory reset on it was successful in getting everything running.

an at the moment it is building the raid after adding in the 2TB drive.

so thanks for all the responses! everything seems to be running smoothly now.

    :D
