ReadyNas NV+ Checking FS stops at 48%

Disk 3 seems to be failing. You could try shutting down the NAS and booting the NAS w/o it.

I did as you suggested, removed Disk 3 and rebooted.
It went though the Check FS and finished after a couple of hours or so. It is all working great, can access it and all files seem to be there.
Going to the Web admin page there were 2 pop up messages
- Raid Sync Started on Volume C Wed Mar 16 20:46
- Volume Scan Found and Corrected Errors Thur 17 00:48
Status\Health = Green light on Disks 1,2,4 and Disk 3 is Unkown 1862 GB - Dead
Volume Settings = Configuration: (Expandable RAiD), 4 Disks. Status: Not Redundant. A Disk failure will render this volume dead. It still shows same Disk space as before - 3140GB (56%) of 5555 GB used
Am I right that basically it's spread the data across the 3 remaining disks without any "raid safety' ? (I did mention I wasn't technical :-) )
If I can take your time up a bit further, could you advise me how to get back to normal. I'm guessing I need to replace Disk 3 I've removed ? Guess it's best to buy a new one compared to trying to repair the one I've taken out ? The new one does it need to be the same as one removed (WD 2.0TB SATA /64MB Cache WD20EARS) ? If I buy one do I need to format it before I put it in ? (i use CIFS so my Mac and PCs can access it).

Just looking for a new drive
The ones in it are WD Caviar Green 2.0TB SATA /64MB Cache WD20EARS
Looking at the compatible chart for 2TB there are WD Caviar Black WD2002FAEX and WD Caviar Green WD20EARX
None of above are available, ones I've found are:-
WD Green 2.0TB WD20EZRX (described as a Desktop Hard Drive) £67
WD Red 2.0TB WD20EFRX (described as a NAS Hard Drive) £77.99
They are all SATA 64MB Cache. The WD Green seems nearest to the current ones but the Red is described for NAS, which is best to buy, thanks.

The WD20EFRX (Red Drive) is the better choice - you get a three year warranty (compared to one with the desktop model). That alone is worth the price difference.
You hot-insert it into the NAS (that is, with the NAS running), and you don't format it. You can test it in a windows PC using WD's Lifeguard software if you have a SATA->USB adapter (or a spare SATA connector in the PC).
The NV+ v1 has a dedicated parity disk (usually disk 4). When you are running w/o a data disk, the NAS is reconstructing all the missing data the other three disks (1, 2, and 4 in your case). You might notice a slowdown in performance as a result.
It would be good to copy the files from the NAS to the PC (at least the most critical ones) before you install the replacement. The NAS needs to resync when you insert it, and that will put some stress on the remaining disks. If there is a second disk failure you will lose your data. While the drives do look healthy from the stats, they can/do fail without warning.
