ReadyNAS NVX rsync/duplication - Crossover Ethernet?

So I have two NVX NAS, identical drives, one primary, one backup.

Both have two ethernet ports, only one from each NVX is attached to the same switch. Can I plug an ethernet cable in the spare ethernet ports and backup from one to the other without going through the switch?

Yeah, I know nothing about ethernet, I'm just a user...

If you have a gigabit ethernet switch there is no real performance advantage in doing this - and it can create misbehaviors.

What you could alternatively do is try connecting both NICs on both NAS to the switch, and configure the two NAS to use NIC bonding - using the ALB method.

That might also misbehave, so if you see any issues the first thing to try is to disconnect one of the ethernet cables.

I figured it wouldn't be straight forward, although hoped.

I copied data between a couple of laptops this way with Windows many years ago, before USB existed, so figured it was worth asking. Yes, both have 1GB NICS and are attached to a switch that does 1GB. As you know from my earlier question, the primary is in the middle of a resync following a drive failure, once thats done I'll get this setup.
