ReadyNAS NVX web interface no longer works in Windows 10

Hi,

I recently fired up my ReadyNAS NVX Business Edition to set up some new backup jobs after a period of many months of inactivity. The system booted up ok and performed an FS check successfully, but when I tried to access via a browser on my Windows 10 system I found the web interface pretty dysfunctional.  For example, under "Status" if you try and look at Health or Logs you get this error:

"Error in evaluating table display lul ReferenceError: 'lul_display' is undefined"

I Googled the error and didn't find a great deal, but what I did find seemed to point towards browser compatability.  I have tried using Edge and Chrome, and then Internet Explorer 11 with the NAS's URL added to "compatabilty mode".  None of the browsers were capable of rendering the NAS interface as it used to work in Windows 7.

I am running RAIDiator 4.2.28 and so downloaded the latest image 4.2.30 and unzipped it on my local PC desktop.  The interface allows me to browse my local system and select this image. I can click the "Upload and verify image.." button.  It clearly uploads the image but then nothing else happens.  The remote method of checking for an updated firmware image doesn't work either.

My hope was that the firmware update might fix the interface problem, but since I can't install the update I am stuck!

One last thing, and I don't know if this is related, but since Windows 10 I am getting a certificate error in my browser which I have to force my way though in order to access the NAS which Windows things is "unsafe".

Does anyone have any advice on how I can get my NAS back or do these devices have built-in obsolescence?

Thanks for any help!  By the way- I am not entirely sure mine is a RNR4425 but it is 8Tb and is definitely an NVX.

  • Hi Phil, I think he means is the data is that is on the readynas backed up somewhere?

Since you indicate that the readynas itself is a backup for another server, you may want to consider making an up to date backup on a different device, if possible. External drive or another server for example, if you don't have an additional dedicated backup nas.

you might try using a different computer to see if the web admin works on a physically different computer, just to rule out something specific to your desktop.

Alternatively, if you have the resources you could try running a virtual windows 7 machine (or even a linux VM) using either hyper-v or virtualbox.

You may want to do some google research on windows 10 and virtual machines if you decided to go this route.

  • have you tried rebooting the nvx since uploading the update?

with the ui being wacky, it might be ready to update but not properly displaying.

alternatively if rebooting doesn't upgrade, you could try a factory default (this would remove all data still on the device, so don't do that if you don't have a confirmed good backup), or an 'os reinstall' from the boot menu, could potentially help.

      Thanks TeknoJnky

I have just tried a reboot using the power button on the front panel but it just booted back into 4.2.28.

I really don't want to do a factory default at the moment - that would be my last resort I think.  Would an OS reinstall leave my data intact? I cannot see a boot menu though.

If I copied the firmware to a USB drive and plugged that in, would it see that if I rebooted?

You should be able to see the hardware boot menu.  It's described on page 21-22 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RNDU2000/ReadyNAS_Ultra_UltraPlus_NVX_Pro_HW_en_8July11.pdf

An OS reinstall should leave the data intact.  The network configuration is reset to use DHCP (and no bonding).  The admin password is reset to factory default (netgear1).

One possible cause of your problem is a near-full OS partition.  An OS reinstall won't help that (and it could make it worse).  If you can get to the logs web page, you might try deleting the log files (but not downloading them).  That might clear enough space out of the OS partition to return you to more normal operation.
