I too could not get email and didn't find the answer in this thread. My solution was simple once I realized that I had not defined the gateway and dns servers on the Network tab. Once I entered those ip addresses, I tried 3 different email accounts - att yahoo, bellsouth, and gmail - all worked successfully. I DID NOT have to use the SMTP settings. If you don't know your gateway/dns IP addresses - open cmd window (start, accessories, command prompt) which is a DOS window - type ipconfig /all to get detailed information about your network.
