I was going wacko as well trying to get these to work. I have a ReadyNAS Pro 4 running 4.2.21
The only thing that worked was to:
1) select the gmail option
2) enter the gmail address in "Alert contact 1" field, and also the "user" field
3) enter your gmail account password in the "password" field
4) hit "Apply"
5) hit "send test message"
At that point I received a notification at my gmail account.
THEN... you can add other email addresses in the Alert Contact 2 and 3 fields (NOT the Alert Contact 1 field) hit "Apply" and then "Send Test Message" again.
At that point I was able to receive alerts at all three email accounts. The first was a gmail account, the second a comcast account and the third was a domain account for my company.
It seems most of the threads that had happy ending followed a similar approach. Would be nice if this was spelled out somewhere in the manual, but you also have the problem of google changing the rules of the game without notice as they tend to do.
