ReadyNAS Pro - file/folder access permissions

Hi everyone,

I've contacted Netgear support about this issue but they are too slow so I thought I'd try my luck here.

I work for an IT management company and I manage the ReadyNAS Pro for one of our clients companies. They use the Pro as their fileserver and it has multiple shares that are mapped as network drives to each user's PC (different employees have specific drives mapped depending on their position in the company.)

There is a general share which is used by all members of the company and then there are additional shares that are accessed by certain people only (for example, the management team has access to the 'managers' share). For the past month or so they've been having some really irritating issues relating to access permissions.

At random, certain users are unable to save files into folders created by others. In some cases, users cannot even save or rename files in folders they themselves created.

I have followed instructions to make the NAS completely open for the general share (which everyone is allowed access to) and this issue STILL comes up. To temporarily resolve it I tick the "set ownership..." box under advanced options for the share. However, it is usually a week (sometimes less) before I get another email to tell me someone is unable to save or move or rename a file.

This is frustrating, 1) because these people shouldn't have to be emailing me every few days to get access to a share they should already have access to, and 2) it wastes my time having to remotely connect and check that box each time to reset permissions for everyone.

This has also been happening with other shares that require restricted access, but users who belong to the access group are having trouble opening/saving/renaming files and folders.

This happens erratically and I can't see what else I can do to make the shares less restrictive in the web admin panel.

If anyone has any suggestions to help fix this, it will be very much appreciated.

edit: just some additional information, each share currently has opportunistic locking enabled. Could this interfere with user access?

  • Hi AJ and Alex,

Sorry for my late response. I haven't really been checking back here, but yes, I am still having this issue with our client's ReadyNAS.

I have had a level 3 support technician logging on to various users' computers for the past month trying to troubleshoot and he told me it was a Windows problem. There is nothing in the ReadyNAS log files to show that users are being denied permission, and yet there are still users getting "access denied" when they try to open some files. It is happening less frequently now but it's still happening which is not good, and the problem is intermittent which makes it really hard to troubleshoot. I have resorted to doing research on my own as I feel I cannot even get help from level 3 tech support.

Sorry I couldn't help you more Alex, if I do find a fix I'll report back here. Good luck.
  • Those of you monitoring this conversation...

I just updated to the latest (non-beta) firmware 4.2.19. On a first test, this seems to have fixed the problem. I was able to create a folder on a share from "computer A" logged in as myself. I then added a text document to that folder from "computer B" logged in as my wife. I was able to modify and save that file from "computer A," still logged in as myself.

Previously, under 4.2.17, I would get "access denied" messages when trying to modify a file/folder as any user other than that file/folder's creator (which was NOT the intended behavior on a family share!).

I will do some more testing and post the folder settings later... but for those of you who have been struggling with this (at least in a Windows environment), I recommend the upgrade to 4.2.19.

  • i spent a ton (well for me anyways) of money on a new ultra 4 NAS mostly after reading reviews. i run the home edition of windows 7 x64. since the day i got the NAS i get a error message when trying to access any music files: you do not have permission to access". strangely, this only happens with music files - i can access/change any other kind of file. i have spent literally days with level 2 support and no working solution was found. i was told "this is a windows problem". well, no - windows works fine. it is a problem with readynas integrating with windows 7. as i bought this specifically to be a music server, my only option now is dumping the stupid thing on ebay and recouping whatever i can and getting a QNAP. i am not very happy about this.
  • downloaded latest firmware and guess what? it didn't fix it, why would it fix it. and now my nas doesn't show up on my network.
  • We have had file/access permission problems from day one with our Ultra 2 Plus.

If you let your users use the admin access username and password, you will not have the access problems.

I would prefer something else, but for now that works for us.

We too recently upgraded our problematic NAS to the latest firmware, 4.2.19, over a week ago and so far no one's been having any problems. I believe this has probably fixed the issue, however am going to keep an eye on it for a wee bit longer just in case.
