ReadyNas Pro 6 - upgraded fans sound like jet engine

Running OS 6.7.5 took the plunge and upgraded like williams_nest:

and walshlink:
https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/RNP-6-w-Xeon-CPU-and-upgraded-fans/td-p/1022747
and others

Previous config
E5800 CPU
Stock Comdell Crown AGE08015B12V CPU fan
Stock Comdell Crown AGE12025B12M System fan

Previous idle
CPU 1757 RPM, 51C (124F)
System 1081 RPM, 56C (133F)
Disks 37-39C (96-102F)

Upgraded the CPU, cleaned out the filthy dusty heat sink, replaced thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5

Current config
X3230 CPU
Noctua NF-R8 Redux-1800 PWM CPU fan
Noctua NF-F12 Industrial iPPC 3000 PWM System fan

Current idle
CPU 620 RPM, 35C (95F)
System 2636 RPM, 38C (100F)
Disks 27-28C (80-82F)

Impressive cooling ability-- my only disappointment is this thing sounds like a jet airplane taking off... even in "Quiet" mode and idling. Any advice to safely quiet without affecting cooling ability? Going back to stock fans is not an option.

  • Thats odd ????
Mine is still solid as a rock. Had some fan problems at higher OS than 6.5, but now I have upgraded - first to 6.7.4 - and a few days ago to 6.7.5

The system has run 24/7 ever since the upgrade 3 years ago except maybe for less than 10 days.

I'm running with the fan setting at "Balanced" which gives me higher system temperature (around 60c) but both fans well below 1000rpm.

Drives are just below 40c, core 1 is around 50c, core 2 is around 55c, cpu is below 60.

It must be your system fan that is making the noise.

Are you sure the system fan is correctly connected / working correctly?

It certainly sounds like the PWM control isn't working properly, so the fan is at full speed.  I agree, check the connections.
