ReadyNAS Pro to RN516 Upgrade
I'm about to buy a RN516 with 6 Seagate 4TB 3.5" SATA3 64MB Cache OEM Hard Drive (ST4000VN000) that I will install myself. I currently keep all my media data on a ReadyNAS Pro 6350.
I intend to use the RN516 as my new media server with the ReadyNAS Pro as my backup (until I run out of space).
A few questions before I start the project:
1) Any tips on the best way to setup the diskless RN516 with the 6 new 4TB drives? Should I start expanding with 1 drive or several installed at once?
2) Once the 516 is setup, I have 8TB of data to move to the RN516. Is there a faster way than setting up a RSync backup from the PRO to the RN516 through the network?
Thanks for your help!

The first step is to go into services->standard file protocols, and enable NFS (then click apply).herbg wrote: Hmmm ... dumb question but how do you check if NFS is enabled on the ReadyNAS Pro 6350?
When I check the Shares in FrontView, I only see tabs for CIFS, AFP, HTTP/S, and RSync, and Advanced.
Nothing related to NFS is obvious.
Thanks,
Herb... - herbgTutorYou guys are so helpful! Thanks! This forum is just great for newbies like me.
Backups are now running - 1st as NFS full-backup, then switched to RSync for incremental backups.
Once the files are fully transferred, then I switch the RN516 to become the primary media server NAS. - herbgTutorI noticed my backups to the new RN516 are not mirroring the folder structure.
For example, my Music files are stored on the "Music" share of the ReadyNAS PRO 6350. When
backed up to the RN516's "Music" share, I now find a Music/Music/ folder arrangement - in effect,
the share is copied into the new share.
I double checked my backup settings in the RN516 and couldn't find anything to avoid this.
Any thoughts on this? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHow are you doing your backups? Share by Share? running on the pro, or on the RN516?
I do share by share backups running on the RN102 (using rsync, with the source on the pro). I don't see the /music/music problem you are having. - herbgTutorI am running the Backup from the RN516 using the ReadyNAS PRO as the source.
For the Source, I choose Remote as the Type, then pick Remote: NFS or RSync, with the path being the Share (in this case "Music").
For the Destination, I choose Share as the Type, with the "Music" share as the Name. The Path is "NAS-6E-45-90\Media_Server\Music".
I wonder if I simply chose the PATH as "NAS-6E-45-90\Media_Server" as the solution to the duplicate folders.
Is this how you setup your backup? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe destination path should be blank.
- herbgTutorNew problem ... now that I have the RN516 as my source media server, I want to backup my shares to the ReadyNAS Pro 6350. The RN516 is the Source and the ReadyNAS Pro is the Destination.
In the SOURCE field, I select Type: "share" with the name "share:Photos". Host is blank. Path is "PHOTOS". Login and Password are blank.
In the DESTINATION field, I select Type: "remote" with the name: "remote: Rsync Server". The Host is the IP address of the ReadyNAS Pro: 192.168.1.20. The Path is blank. Login and Password are populated.
The TEST CONNECTION is successful. When I start the Backup, I get the following error message:
"Error backup job "Photos" connection cannot be established. Please check the connection and authentication, if required."
I get this with each Share backup job. Any thoughts on what's wrong?
Thanks,
Herb... - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhat firmware are you running?
One problem is that the path should not be blank. it should be the destination share name on the pro. - herbgTutorFirmware: 4.2.26 for ReadyNAS Pro and 6.1.9 on the RN516.
If I add the PATH to the DESTINATION, I'll end up with a "Photos" folder embedded into the "Photos" folder of the ReadyNAS Pro - won't I? - herbgTutorI should explain more about the shares and folders that are setup.
Both the RN516 and the ReadyNAS Pro have 5 Shares setup: Backup, Movies, Music, Photos, Documents
Each shares contains folders (and sub-folders) that contain documents and media.
For example, a music folder on the RN516 has the following path: \\NAS-6E-45-90\Music\James Brown - Greatest Hits! (1991) [FLAC]
An identical MUSIC folder would appear on the ReadyNAS Pro: \\NAS-EA-5F-B1\Music\James Brown - Greatest Hits! (1991) [FLAC]
I want the RN516 to backup incremental changes to the ReadyNAS Pro so that I have a close-to-identical backup NAS with all my media and critical documents.
During previous attempts, new sub-folders with duplicate files were created during the backup. I certainly want to avoid this. So, I'm struggling to understand why my Backup settings are not working.
Thanks.
