ReadyNAS Pro to RN516 Upgrade
I'm about to buy a RN516 with 6 Seagate 4TB 3.5" SATA3 64MB Cache OEM Hard Drive (ST4000VN000) that I will install myself. I currently keep all my media data on a ReadyNAS Pro 6350.
I intend to use the RN516 as my new media server with the ReadyNAS Pro as my backup (until I run out of space).
A few questions before I start the project:
1) Any tips on the best way to setup the diskless RN516 with the 6 new 4TB drives? Should I start expanding with 1 drive or several installed at once?
2) Once the 516 is setup, I have 8TB of data to move to the RN516. Is there a faster way than setting up a RSync backup from the PRO to the RN516 through the network?
Thanks for your help!

- herbgTutorI run the backup job on the 6350 now because of the difficulty when it's run on the RN516. The RN516 will not backup to the share without creating another sub-folder. Netgear Support is advising a full Factory Reset (wiping all my data) in order to get the backup jobs working on the RN516. Do you concur?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI don't think this would be resolved by a factory reset, but you could still try it.
- herbgTutorIt's a huge undertaking wiping out 8.70TB of data and then restoring it back to the NAS - only to find out that the problem persists.
I'm curious why you think this won't solve the problem. Is there something else that can be tested? - herbgTutorI recently send screenshots of my Backup Job settings. See case #23988706. They advise a Factory Reset.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you try using the exclude list on the Advanced tab?
- herbgTutorI finally found the Advanced Tab in the RN516. For my backup job of the "BACKUP" share on the RN516 to the "BACKUP" share of the 6350, I entered "/backup" to the exclude list in the advanced tab.
Unfortunately, I immediately got an error, stating that the connection could not be established.
Did I use the right entry in the exclude list? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPerhaps try /data/backup
- herbgTutor/data/backup also failed.
- herbgTutorHere's an update on the struggle with this RN516 ...
Netgear Technical Support has not been able to resolve this problem. I've now completed TWO Factory Defaults and set the NAS up from scratch TWICE
in an attempt to purge any potential corrupted files.
Ultimately, this has not solved the backup problem: Doing an RSync Backup from the SHARE on the RN516 to the identically named SHARE on the ReadyNas Pro 6350 is not possible without embedding a duplicate folder - with all the sub-files - into the destination SHARE.
This defeats the whole intention of using two Netgear NAS's for redundancy: The "master" NAS (the RN516) only backs up differential files to the destination NAS (the 6350) using the RSync backup protocol. So, when a new file is added to the "master", only this file should be backed up to the destination NAS since it already contains identical data.
That's not what's happening.
Instead, the "master" NAS is backing up the entire SHARE to the destination NAS SHARE by embedding a duplicate folder - containing all the files - within the SHARE.
That's not what's supposed to happen.
Netgear seems stumped as to why this is happening. I've made a significant investment in time and expense by purchasing both of these NAS's, populating them with 12 4TB drives, in an effort to gain redundancy for my data.
As you can ascertain, I am not a happy camper right now. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserDid you try running the backups on the Pro?
