ReadyNAS Remote client blocks ip-address start with 5.

Hi!

A strange thing. When logged on to ReadyNAS Remote client on my mac I can't connect to www.bredbanskollen.se (5.178.76.126)
When logged ut from the client I can.
Netstat looks like this (some numbers in address hidden by my X:s):

Routing tables

Internet:
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Netif Expire
default dsldevice.lan UGSc 13 0 en0
5 link#9 UC 3 0 tap2
5.0.0.1 ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff UHLWbI 0 4 tap2
5.169.XXX.XX 8e:5e:71:be:af:26 UHLWIi 3 1286 tap2 1092
www.bredbandskolle link#9 UHRLWIi 2 20 tap2

Anyone know what's happening here?

I have OS X 10.9.2 and ReadyNAS Remote Client ver. 1.2.15 (connecting to a remote ReadyNAS over internet)

The short story is that readynas remote is incorrectly hijacking public internet addresses (5.x.x.x) for its VPN. I've complained about it several times now, but Netgear remains asleep. There is no workaround that I know of.

The longer story is that the 5.x.x.x addresses were reserved years ago (and were safe to use then).

But as IPv4 addresses began to run out, many formerly reserved addresses were released. In November 2010 the 5.x.x.x range was assigned to RIPE, and are now being used. For some reason Netgear has ignored that for nearly 4 years.
  • Thank you! I almost got crazy over this problem.
I'll join you in the hunt for a solution. :-)

  • Stephen B! You are so right. Netgear does their math and concludes that ReadyNAS Remote owners is not worth the economical effort it requires to make it work properly. I talked Netgear support and it boiled down to this (from a officiell Netgear person): There will most likely not be any solution presented from Netgear anytime soon as that would inflict a complete overhaul of software both on user and service-provider end along with hardware.

Well. End of discussion. Slap in the face. Nada, nothing.
