ReadyNAS share consumed space always 0

I’m looking into why the NAS shows Data consumed as only reflecting the Utils share of 584Mb.  The PsyData share uses 4.26Tb.  It shows snapshots as consuming 5.67Tb and just over 1Tb remaining.  I...

THE SOLUTION TURNED OUT TO BE DEFRAGMENTING THE VOLUMES

& possibly also deleting and turing off Snapshots first.  Reflashing and Balancing operations do not help with this issue.  From my diary:
18:18 I re-flashed the 314 f/w but (as I expected) that did not fix the Consumed = 0 issue.  I saw that I had only deleted Snapshots for PsyData (the Share for which data used was showing as 0) but not for Utils.  Misreading advice on how to do it manually I installed and got SSH (actually a more modern piece of code called ‘Gate One NT’ – it uses Python for example) working (I had to enable the SSH protocol then allow the admin user to use it) only to find that I didn’t need to ‘touch’ old snapshots as all of mine are post ReadyNAS OS 6.2 and that I could delete them manually in a very straightforward way.  So I did, and that still, again unsurprisingly, didn’t make any difference to the Consumed bug.  So I then looked into what Balancing does – it’s sort of like a partial defrag – so at 18:15 I started a Balance operation which is already 24% complete.  I have a fair degree of hope that this, as it deals with the availability of metadata, will fix the Consumed error.  Either way I plan to run a defrag…
During the Balance I realised that there were loads of Snapshots for the Resilio Sync share – I can’t imagine what they contain!  Maybe how Resilio Sync is configured?  Anyhow, I took the risk of deleting the lot >while< the Balance was still running, it seems to be OK with that.  It’s exciting: the Balance is now 80% complete…  Meh: BalanceFinished&DataConsumedStillWrong.jpg :(  So I ran Defrag – and 19:13 at long last – perhaps because I’d disabled Snapshots (speaking of which https://community.netgear.com/t5/Using-your-ReadyNAS/Disabling-snapshots/td-p/955102 is wrong – there is no option to set the Snapshot Schedule to Never – what you have to do is turn off Smart Snapshot, and in Manual set the schedule so that all hours of every day are set to OFF – Day Off or Night Off - and I couldn’t work out how to let the forum know!) the Data consumed bug is gone and the NAS knows I have c.50% free – now to get on with converting .MTS files to .MP4 (that’ll save at around 1Tb)…
