ReadyNAS Ultra 2 - Can't get past setup
I have an old ReadyNAS Ultra 2 which was working fine last week. I thought I no longer needed it so removed all data and took the disks out.
I've now realised that I do have a use for it (not the data - I am NOT trying to recover the data), but I needed more capacity than I had before. Therefore I put in 2 * 2TB disks (previously used, but I just want to wipe them and start afresh).
On booting up with the new disks, I could scan it in RAIDar and it showed the device but the status was "Corrupt Root". No problem - I'll do a factory reset. Rebooted the device with the reset button held in, waited for all lights to come on, then used the backup button to toggle through the options until just disk1 was lit - ie the Factory Reset option. Pressed the reset button to confirm the selection and waited.
I'm now able to see the device on RAIDar with an IP of 192.168.168.168 and I can ping that from my PC. I can't get to an admin screen in an Internet Browser though (even though I've confirmed the Windows Firewall is swicthed off on the Windows 10 PC that I'm connecting from)
RAIDar shows 'Checking Disks' then takes me to a setup screen. I select the volume setting (have tried XRAID and Flex Raid options) and the statis changes to 'Installing' and then after a fer minutes, 'Creating Volume'. At this point the Power light is off, but the 'act' lights and 'disk 1' and 'disk 2' lights are on.
After a while (10 minutes or so), I can still ping the device, but RAIDar can no longer see it. Disk 2 light is flashing whilst Power, Act and Disk 1 are static (on). Eventually (after a couple of hours) Disk 2 stops flashing and I'm left with the Power light and Disk 1 & 2 lights on. I can still ping the device on 192.168.168.168 but RAIDar can't see it and I can't open an admin page.
I've tried one disk instead of 2, tried doing an OS reinstall, and bypassing the disk check on boot, but I always get back to this stage where I can ping it, but can't access it.
Any ideas what might be causing this, or what else I can try?

Sounds like corrupt firmware on the internal flash.
If the old disks haven't been wiped yet, you could remove your 2TB disks, put one of the old disks back in by itself and upload the firmware (e.g. 4.2.31) via Frontview over the top of itself and do the required reboot. see that it comes up fine. Then power down and see if a subsequent factory reset with the 2TB disks installed works.
An alternative would be USB Boot Recovery however that could lead to a corrupt EEPROM.- mxhAspirant
Thanks.
All too hard - I had another old NAS so I used that instead.

Since the drives were used, it is possible that there was a reserved partition type on one or both that the older firmware for the Ultra can't handle and you simply needed to remove any partitioning using a PC. Though you've moved to another device, you may still want to try with a clean drive just to see if that's an easy fix.
