Readynas Ultra 2 - No Volume Exists after suspected HDD crash

Hello Community!

I have a problem accessing my Readynas Ultra 2 after trying to solve what I thought was a HDD crash. Hope you can help, I have tried to find relevant threads but couldn't find a solution.

Equipment is a Readynas Ultra 2 with 2x 2Tb Samsung HDD. Worked without problems for well over 4 years (filling up to approx 65% capacity) until last week I couldn't access the NAS over the network.

After switching the unit off and back on still no luck accessing Frontview and the NAS is not detected in Raidar. On the unit disk #1 led flashes and a repeating sound (approx every 1 second) like a HDD trying to spin up is heard. I suspect HDD#1 crashed so I removed it and restarted the NAS. Succesfully: the unit boots up and files are accessible again. I ordered two WD Red 3Tb drives, thinking it best to replace the crashed HDD and (after data sync) the other old Samsung. After inserting the first new HDD, the original problem is back, NAS won't start up again so I remove the new HDD. The NAS then starts up again, but - horror - does not recognise the remaining HDD anymore: in Frontview the Shares and Volume options return a message 'No Volume exists'. The Health page is showing HDD#1 as 'dead' (because it's not installed) and HDD#2 as OK. Logs show the following:

  •  Volume scan failed to run properly
  • The paths for the shares listed below could not be found. Typically, this occurs when the Readynas is unable to access the data volume. media webroot backup addons-config
  • System is up

In Raidar the NAS is detected, strangely enough showing two drive icons with green tick marks on them.

I would really like to restore access to one or both of the HDDs without deleting the data on them. I do have a backup, however it has been a while - OK, too long - since the last sync...

What should I do?

Is it useful trying to reinstall the OS from the boot menu?

Your help is MUCH appreciated!

RJ

  • Thanks for your response - I contacted a friend with lots of Linux experience, he managed to access the HDDs. One was empty but the other still showed the dates and is now being copied onto a fresh HDD. The Ultra 2 is no longer usable however, bay 1 won't function even with two brand new empty HDDs installed and a factory default reset. On to a new NAS ...

An OS reinstall is unlikely to help.

You might try contacting support (sooner rather than later) and ask for per-incident support.  Data Recovery would be expensive, but they might be able to remount the volume without that.

Then refresh the backup before you do anything else.
