ReadyNas Ultra 6 -bricked after upgrading to OS6

Hi,

I am trying to resurrect an old ReadyNas Ultra 6 I have and as it had OS4 and would not connect to any new machine running Win 11 as the old OS4 only supports TLS1 and SMB 1 (please correct me if I am wrong).

I managed to upgrade to OS6 (or so I thought) until I turned off the unit to move it.

It then just started and had the READYNAS on the front panel for ever.

I connected a VGA monitor to the 16 pin header and can now see the BIOS screen. and after theusual BIOS messages it just say's MBR H Error.

After a lot of searching and playing around, I have managed to get the Boot Menu back, I have tried both OS reinstall and Factory default, and I have tried to connect to the web interface (FrontView) on an old WIN 7 machine.

I get the Frontview interface to show up but no data, (see attached picture)

I have tried the techsupport mode and telnet into the machine, but I not quite sure what I should be looking for.

Another question is how can I upgrade to OS6 manually, ie coping files to local drive. Is this possible.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

This sounds like the VPD got corrupted (perhaps due to a flash memory failure).

Sandshark has looked at this more than I have, so I am tagging him.

Are you still seeing the same message in the VGA since you were able to get to the boot menu?

The error you were getting means the boot flash is corrupted.  A USB re-install can fix that, but the corruption usually affects the vpd file, which is unique to your unit and can only be created by Netgear because of its encryption.

Now that there is no Netgear support or ReadyCloud, it doesn't matter if there are two NAS that report the same serial number.  So if it is the vpd and you can get a copy of one from another Ultra6, then you can use that.

Via the boot menu, can you get to support mode?  The information on how to get to the vpd file is here: Backup-and-restore-of-VPD-file-for-legacy-ReadyNAS-running-OS6
