ReadyNAS Ultra, Twonky and video transcoding
Hi,
This is my first posting on here........
OK, I own a ReadyNAS Ultra2 RNDU2220 and 2x 40" Samsung LCD TV's. My Samsung is a LE40C750 (series 7 - 3D) and my parents is my old LE40B650 (Series 6).
Here are a few problems I am experiencing:
The series 6 TV has more problems playing back video files in various formats, as opposed to the series 7. I expect this as that is what happens when they bring out a new model - they improve things.
BUT, peculiarly, my series 7 TV won't play back footage taken on my Sony HX100V camera, yet my parents' series 6 does (albeit without audio on the latter).
Which brings me to the issue of transcoding and converting media:
Is there any video converting software out there which has a profile for Samsung TV's i.e. their exact media file characteristics:
I have so far gone through many converters, but they all seem to have profiles for Apple devices and Android, but none seem to have a dedicated profile for a TV. This matters as some of the videos I've been converting play back on the TV with full transport functions (FF/REW) and some don't.
Another problem I encountered is that using ReadyDLNA - if I go to any folder with camera photo's taken (jpeg) using my old Samsung L74 digital camera, the media player on the TV crashes taking me back to the start screen.
I fixed the latter by replacing ReadyDLNA with Twonky server. I see that Twonky has the ability to transcode, BUT the video transcoding is greyed out. I have since purchased ffmpeg from readynas extras thinking that this would unlock the feature to no avail.
Although I am fairly experienced with computers (I repair them for a living), I have, as yet been unable to find any instructions on how to enable the transcoding which are understandable. The same goes for enabling php on my readyNAS. The guide here: http://www.readynas.com/?p=140 is cryptic at best:
It describes how to install the EnableRootSSH addon, BUT what it doesn't tell you is how to 'SSH in to the ReadyNAS and bring up a shell command prompt"
So, how do you do the latter? I have tried using Putty, but all I get is errors when typing in the commands, so I must be doing something wrong, or haven't set it up properly. Ideally somebody needs to make a proper guide on how to SSH to a ReadyNAS.
Hopefully somebody will be able to help in this regard.
Thanks in advance.
Andy

You need to ssh into the ip address of the NAS as the user 'root'. Password will initially be the same as the 'admin' (Frontview) user password.
You will of course then need to use Linux shell commands.
