ReadyNV: Can´t get out the Tray...

Hi Folks,

seems to me i´m stupid. Due to a diskfailure i like to replace a HardDisk#2. But I can´t get the Tray out. Tried to push the Button and tried to do it with a paper clip. No latch comes out. It don´t even moves for one inch.

Any Trick or Idea?

  • I am having exactly the same problems with my ReadyNAS Business Pro.

    Installed with 6 (six) Seagate Enterprise harddrives and none of the harddrive eject mechanisms work.

    NONE -- period.

    I had a Seagate Enterprise harddrive dying on me and merely wanted to replace the defective drive with a Western Digital alternative.

    Tested with seal of approvement according to the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL).

    Yeah, that is, if you're able to remove the defecte drive in the first place.

    Thanks to this thread, I was able to remove the drive by using meghod B - by sticking a needle in the drive's front plate.

    My boss should read this -- he'll never let me buy anything from Netgear again.

    My contribution to this thread is what you have to do to force the volume in resync mode -- ReadyNAS' way of telling you that it is regenerating data on the new replacement drive.

    The ReadyNAS manual says that all you have to do is to replace the faulty harddrive with a new one, and a resync will happen spontaneously.

    As long as your drive is on the HCL and is equal or larger in capacity then the replacement drive, you are save.

    After replacing the faulty drive with the new one, nothing happened.

    You read that correctly -- nothing.

    The ReadyNAS front panel still identified drive #2 as defect -- FrontView, the web interface to the ReadyNAS, kept telling me that the drive in slot #2 was dead.

    Even after retrying several times to insert the new drive to trigger any action.

    Then I read in the manual that when you replaced the harddrive while the power was off, you should now turn the power back on.

    Ahhh, I guess all those years of education and training finally pay off.

    So I decided to powercycle the ReadyNAS.

    Screw those hundred users retrieving and storing their k-zillion files and documents on our networkshares.

    Who needs 'em? Well, I do, to keep my job.

    Now the ReadyNAS front panel reported:

    <usual power-on blah-blah>
    Testing disk 2
    <couple of minutes pass>
    Disk 2 passed
    Resyncing
    Resync C: 0.1%
    <get sufficient cups of coffee and something to read>
    Resync C: 26.0%

    I think I might safely deduct that my new drive is being deployed and that my X-RAID2 volume will be back in full swing in a couple of hours.

    I only had to stick a needle in the front of the drive and powercycle the NAS.
